Shoppach, Tribe avoid arbitration
Tribe has avoided arbitration with Shoppach and signed him to a 1-year deal for 2009. Deal is worth $1.95M.
Most estimate were he'd get about $2M, so no surprises here.

And another item onto the scale for keeping/ trading Kelly.
If they planned on keeping him long-term, they would have likely signed him to a longer deal.

eh, not necessarily. Shoppach hasn't even had a full ML season of starting experience.....even if the Tribe was planning on keeping Shoppach long-term, doesn't make much sense to give him a long-term deal now. Wait and see if he can repeat the performance before you do that.
Now I still think Shoppach will be gone from the Indians before he's eligible for free agency......but you never know....
