Instructional League 101
This is a re-post of a piece last year on the Fall Instructional League originally researched and written by Dennis Nosco in the fall of 2007. This piece is very informative, and provides a good explanation of what Instructs is all about.

Paul Cousineau and I are back on the cyber waves tonight with another edition of Smoke Signals. The Indians' season is quickly coming to a close and we will touch on some of the things (or lack of things) worth talking about these final weeks in what seems to be a crawl to the finish line on a season to forget. We'll also touch on the minor leagues and how the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Akron Aeros...

Rodriguez Bomb in 9th Propels Aeros
Akron Leads Series 2-0, Can Clinch Title Friday
Josh Rodriguez drilled a three-run homer in the top of the ninth and Josh Judy survived a heart-stopping bottom half of the inning as the Aeros survived a wild 7-6 victory over Connecticut in game two of the Eastern League Championship Series. The 2009 Kinston Indians had a fantastic start and an even better finish, as their playoff push came down to the final game of the regular season. In between, the 2009 K-Tribe struggled through an ever changing lineup and untimely injuries, leading to a 60-78 overall record, tying the 1994 K-Tribe for the fewest wins in Kinston Indians History. The K-Tribe will be remembered, however, for an unbelievable...

Smith Makes Most Of Opportunity
It was a season full of surprises and disappointments in the Indians farm system this year, but one of the bigger surprises was that of Low-A Lake County right-handed pitcher Steve Smith.
Smith, 23, had a sensational season as the Captains closer going 2-3 with 26 saves and a 2.36 ERA in 47 games. In 53.1 innings pitched he allowed 42 hits, 12 walks, and had 62 strikeouts. He finished 2nd in...

Family Ties Strong For Greenwell
The minor league season is all about progress. The hope is a player when he goes to camp in early March is a much better, different player by the time the season ends six months later in early September.
One player who showed vast improvement this year in sort of a breakout season is Low-A Lake County outfielder Bo Greenwell.
Greenwell, 20, just put the finishing touches on a solid...

Where In The World Is Jordan Brown?
I wrote earlier in the week about the Indians decision to not roster Triple-A Columbus outfielder/first baseman Jordan Brown. The piece was more focused on providing the Indians point of view and some of the reasoning behind the callup, and I purposely left my opinion and some of my rationalization on the decision out in order not to take away from the information presented.
The non-callup...

Beau Mills homered and drove in three runs and also made a key play in the field as the Aeros claimed the Southern Division pennant for the fifth straight year, defeating Reading 9-3 and sweeping the Phillies three games to none in this best-of-five SDCS. Akron now awaits the winner of the Northern Division finals between Connecticut and New Britain, which Connecticut leads two games to one.

It seems that Mother Nature is the only thing that can stop the Akron Aeros right now.
The Aeros, winners of 10 in a row dating to the regular season and on the verge of clinching a fourth straight trip to the Eastern League Championship Series, will have to wait at least one more day as tonight’s contest against the Reading Phillies has been rained out. The game will be made up tomorrow...

Brown Not Cleveland Bound...For Now
Triple-A Columbus wrapped up their regular season yesterday, and most of the players have now gone home for the season. It was expected that a player or two would go north and play in Cleveland for the remainder of the season, and this happened when catcher Lou Marson was recalled yesterday; however, it was a surprise to learn that not only was first baseman/outfielder Jordan Brown not coming north...
