Six run sixth drops Captains, 10-1
Big inning once again sinks Captains
April 24, 2013
COMSTOCK PARK, MI- The main theme of the series has been a big inning putting the game away and the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-9) did just that. The Whitecaps scored seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Lake County Captains (6-13) by a final score of 10-1 Wednesday afternoon.
The Captains scored first with a run in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo hit a one-out single to right field. One batter later, a pitch by Whitecaps’ starter Edgar De La Rosa plunked second baseman Robel Garcia. Right fielder Logan Vick drove in Castillo with a RBI single to right, Vick’s eighth RBI of the year.
Right-hander Joe Colon (0-1, 4.15 ERA), making his second start of 2013, held the Whitecaps scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.
Third basemen Mario Martinez led off with a double to left field. He moved to third base on a groundout and came home on a RBI single by left fielder Danry Vasquez. Vasquez stole second -- his fourth steal of the year -- and advanced to third base on a single. Cue first baseman Jeff Holm, who lined a two-run, two-out triple into the center field gap. West Michigan held a 3-1 lead after three innings.
De La Rosa came out of the game after four innings of work. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits while walking four and striking out four. Left-hander Joshua Turley (3-1, 2.35 ERA) entered the game for the fifth inning.
Luis Morel relieved Colon after five innings of work. Colon allowed three runs on six hits while giving up one walk and he struck out seven. Colon took the loss, his first of the season.
Morel was rudely welcomed by the Whitecaps lineup in the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases before catcher Adolfo Reina drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Morel gave up two consecutive RBI singles before a fielding error loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. Vasquez cleared the bases with a three-run triple to center field. Second baseman Devon Travis drove a fly ball to center field, deep enough to bring home Vasquez.
After all of the damage was done, West Michigan held a 10-1 lead after six innings.
Morel surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits in the final three innings of the game. He walked two and struck out one.
The Whitecaps outhit the Captains 11-5 as Lake County fell to 2-10 when outhit by the opposition.
Vick led the Captains with two hits to push his team-leading average to .348 and drove in his eighth RBI of the year, the only run of the game.
