On-Deck with the Captains: 8/14/13 - 8/20/13
August 21, 2013
The Lake County Captains continued their recent success with a handful of W’s last week, complete with one of their own being deemed Cleveland Indians Minor League Player of the Week. As the playoffs loom closer, the team now must press to produce offensively, which has been its Achilles all year.
Jeremy Lucas, C
5 G, .340 BA, .443 OBP, 1.133 OPS, 6-for-18, 4 R, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 3:6 K:BB
Jeremy Lucas continued his tear through Midwest League pitching last week and the organization took notice. Lucas was named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Week, and rightfully so. His average is presently up to .295 and he hit .355 through the month of July.
Dylan Baker, SP
1 G, 1 GS, 0-0, 6 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 H, 7:1 K:BB
Once again, Baker proves why he’s become one of the organization’s more exciting starting pitching prospects. He’s had four-straight solid starts and is 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA so far this August. Before the All-Star break, Baker’s ERA was 4.52. Since then, his ERA has been 3.00 and sits at a collective 3.77.
Dorssys Paulino, SS
6 G, .300 BA, .328 OBP, .822 OPS, 8-for-26, 5 R, 2 RBI, 4:1 K:BB
August has been Paulino’s best month so far. While it’s a shame it’s taken him this long to get his bat going, it couldn’t come at a better time as the Captains have a shot at making the Midwest League playoffs.
Walking the Plank
Felix Sterling, SP
1 G, 1 GS, 2.2 IP, 10.12 ERA, 7 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 4:7 K:BB
Sterling received the nod for a start last week and the results weren’t pretty. To be fair, he has been a reliever most of the year, but he couldn’t seem to find the plate on Wednesday. It was painful to witness, so hopefully Sterling will return to the bullpen in his next appearance.
Jorge Martinez, OF
7 G, .157 BA, .274 OBP, .624 OPS, 5-for-24, 3 R, 2 RBI, 11:3 K:BB
Once again, Martinez has failed to produce offensively and seems to strike out every chance he gets. He’s second on the team in strikeouts with 108, an ugly contrast to the 21 walks he’s drawn.
Taking On Water
Felix Sterling was placed on the 7-day disabled list with a right forearm strain this week.
Starting pitcher Luis Lugo was promoted to the Captains from the short-season Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He made his Captains debut on Tuesday, where he tossed five scoreless innings and gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out five.
Reliever Kyle Blair was also assigned to the Captains from Mahoning Valley. Blair spent some time in Lake County last season before he pitched most of the year with the high-A Carolina Mudcats.
Aaron Siliga was released by the organization last Wednesday. The outfielder missed a month of the season with a hand injury and was batting .190 between 10 games with Carolina and 23 games with the Captains.
Starting pitcher Ryan Merritt was promoted to the Mudcats on Monday. The lefty was 6-9 with a 3.42 ERA through 24 games.
The Captains are presently 10 games from elimination from the playoff race. They're 5.5 games back in their division, meaning the next series with Dayton, who's ranked just above the Captains, is crucial.
On the Horizon
The Captains head home for a three-game series with the Dayton Dragons from Wednesday to Friday. This is the second-to-last home stand of the season before Lansing comes to town next week.
