The Carolina Mudcats began a series at the Salem Red Sox with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings Friday night at Lewisgale Field.

Joesph Colon made his first start off the DL and pitched three innings with two hits, one run and one strikeout. Rob Nixon (1-3) took the loss--the third in a row for Carolina. The Mudcats are 2-6 in the second half and 24-54 overall.

Francisco Lindor double started the night for the Mudcats and he made it home with a single from right fielder Jordan Smith to get Carolina on the board first. Salem was unable to get past first base in the bottom of the first and the second inning passed without runs from either team.

The Red Sox scored their first run in the top of the third inning with two walks and a single from Stefan Welch to score Deven Marrero. The Mudcats responded in the bottom of the third with a leadoff triple from second baseman Joe Wendle. Left fielder Bo Greenwell grounded out to score Wendle and put Carolina back in the lead.

Owen Dew entered for Colon in the bottom of the fourth and served up a triple to Blake Swihart with two outs, but the inning ended with Swihart stranded on third.

Henry Ramos scored for Salem in the bottom of the fifth with a single, a stolen base and a single from Keury De La Cruz.

Carolina was able to get two Mudcats on base with two walks and a stolen base in the top of the sixth, but designated hitter Bryson Miles grounded into a double play to bring Salem back to the plate.

Dew was relieved by Fabio Martinez in the bottom of the sixth inning. Martinez walked two and committed a throwing error which allowed David Renfroe to score and the Red Sox to take a one-run lead. They nearly scored again butNick Natoli was caught stealing home.

The Mudcats tied the game up with back-to-back doubles from Bryson Myles and Alex Lavisky in the top of the ninth. The Red Sox were unable to get a hit in the bottom of the ninth.

A sacrifice bunt and two singles scored Swihart to give the Red Sox the win in the tenth inning.

Carolina continues their series at Salem Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
