EASTLAKE, OH - The Dayton Dragons made a comeback in the middle innings to take the final game of the three-game series against the Lake County Captains. Lake County (9-21) won two out of three after falling in the finale 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. The series win against Dayton (17-12) was the first since the opening weekend against Lansing, one month ago.

Dayton opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Captains’ starter Mitch Brown. Left fielder Sammy Diaz coaxed a one-out walk and advanced to third base on a single by shortstop Carlton Daal. Brown tried to pickoff Daal at first, but threw the ball away, scoring Diaz. Second baseman Jamodrick McGruder singled home Daal from second.

The Captains answered with a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Second baseman Claudio Bautista reached on a fielder’s choice. Bautista stole second and moved to third on an error by the catcher. Third baseman Grant Fink walked to put runners on the corners with two outs. The Dragons catcher made his second throwing error of the inning, allowing Bautista to score. Following a walk, shortstop Paul Hendrix hit his second homerun of the year, a three-run shot to right field.

The Captains’ lead was short-lived, as the Dragons tied the game in the next inning. Brown walked the first two batters of the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Brown threw a pitch to the backstop, bringing a runner home. One batter later, Daal doubled home the second run of frame to tie the game at four.

Dayton broke the tie game in the fifth inning as they ended Brown’s day. Brown hit right fielder Jeff Gelalich with a pitch and walked the next batter. Captains’ skipper Mark Budzinski made the call to the bullpen to bring in lefty Kenny Mathews.

Mathews induced a double play, but the lead runner moved to third. Mathews uncorked a wild pitch to score Gelalich. The Dragons led 5-4 at the halfway point.

Brown allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits, and five walks in four plus innings. Brown fanned five batters to go along with a hit batter, wild pitch and balk. Brown fell to 0-5 with a 6.57 ERA on the season.

Dragons’ starter Amir Garrett gave up four runs on seven hits in four and one third innings. He walked four and struck out four. Zack Weiss entered in relief and kept the Captains off the board.

Only holding a one-run lead, Dayton added an insurance run in the ninth. Mathews allowed a single and a walk before leaving the game with one out. Alexis Paredes entered the game to finish it off. Paredes struck out the first batter he faced before loading the bases with a single. The final run came home on a passed ball by catcher Richard Stock.

Weiss earned his second win of the year with three and two third innings of shutout ball. Alejandro Chacin struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.

In the loss, Lake County outhit the Dragons eight to six. Hendrix led the Captains with two hits and three RBI’s. Six other players added a hit, including two doubles.

On Monday, the Captains will travel to Comstock Park, Michigan to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps in a three game series. RHP Robbie Aviles (0-1, 1.02) will make the start for the Captains and RHP Jonathon Crawford (1-1, 3.04) will toe the rubber for the Whitecaps. First pitch is at 6:35 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.

Notes: Prior to the game, LHP Matt Whitehouse was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List. To fill his roster spot, RHP Kerry Doane was added to the roster. Doane was a 24th round pick in the 2013 Draft out of East Tennessee State University.
