EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake County Captains dropped the finale of a three-game series against the Burlington Bees with a 6-1 loss Saturday.

Lefty Luis Lugo (0-3, 9.58 ERA) received the start for the Captains against Burlington righty Garrett Nuss (1-0, 2.25 ERA).

Lugo hiccupped in the second inning as he issued a leadoff walk to third baseman Angel Rosa. Catcher Anthony Bemboom followed with a shot that cleared the right-field fence, giving Burlington the early 2-0 lead.

The Bees seemed to work in pairs as they tacked on two more in the fourth inning in lieu of a costly error by shortstop Dorssys Paulino. Designated hitter Eric Aguilera led off with a single and reached second on the one-out error by Paulino, who botched a potential double-play ball. With two out, centerfielder Mark Shannon lined a double to right-center for the 4-0 advantage.

First-round centerfielder Clint Fraizer’s arm was tested in the fifth inning, but two more scored. Back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put runners in scoring position for Aguilera, who sent a sacrifice fly to center. Frazier sent a bullet to the plate, but catcher Eric Haase couldn’t make the pick, allowing one run to score. That ended the day for Lugo, whose final line sealed at 4.2 innings, six runs (three earned), and one walk while striking out six.

Lugo was replaced with piggyback starter Robbie Aviles, who was greeted by Rosa with a double to score one, advancing the Bees to a 6-0 lead.

The Captains crossed the dish in their share of the fifth as right fielder Josh McAdams walked and swiped second. With one out, Frazier singled home McAdams for the Burlington 6-1 lead.

Nuss completed five full innings, surrendering just the one run on three walks and a trio of strikeouts. He was relieved by Ben Carlson, who tossed two scoreless for the Bees. Relievers Michael Smith and Alan Busenitz each tossed a scoreless inning to seal the Bees’ win.

Captains manager Mark Budzinski said his team’s fielding hasn’t been the prettiest, but things are looking up.

“We haven’t played clean baseball the first two weeks of the year, but the last two or three games have been better,” Budzinski said.

Budzinski also noted Aviles’ outing, which dropped his ERA to 0.79 on the year.

“He worked ahead, kept the ball down, worked his sinker both sides of the plate, threw his curveball for strikes and his change-up,” Budzinski said.

Frazier, whose average rose to .308 as he went 2-for-4 on the day, said he feels like he’s been swinging the bat well since joining the team April 17.

“I think I’ve put 14 to 15 balls in play so far,” he said. “I’m doing good so far.”

The Captains are scheduled to enjoy Easter Sunday off before heading to Lansing for a four-game series with the Lugnuts. Right-hander Dace Kime (0-3, 13.06 ERA) is set to start for the Captains April 21.
