Carson homer pushes Clippers to 1-0 win in extras
LEHIGH VALLEY- It only took a little less than seven hours but the Columbus Clippers finally seized a 1-0 victory in 13 innings over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Saturday.
With the contest scoreless going into the 13th inning, Columbus right fielder Matt Carson blasted a solo home run to straight away center to give the Clippers a 1-0 win against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Saturday.
Lehigh Valley reliever Justin Friend was cruising through his inning plus of relief before making a mistake to Carson on a 1-1 pitch left fell right into the outfielders wheelhouse.
After an hour and a half hour rain delay, action resumed in the top of the second but the game was locked in a pitchers dual as neither team could score until the 13th inning.
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco started the game and pitched one inning of shutout baseball before the game was halted because of the weather. Righty Boof Bonser replaced Carrasco after the delay and tossed 3.1 innings with three hits and no runs on one strike out and one walk before giving the remainder of the game up to the bullpen.
The combination of Carrasco, Bonser and relievers Clay Rapada, Bryan Price, Nick Hagadone and Preston Guilmet combined to cool down the IronPigs, holding them to no runs on nine hits throughout the duration of the game.
The group of IronPig pitchers Tyler Cloyd, B.J. Rosenberg, Mauricio Robles, Mike MacDougal, Phillippe Amount cumulated to shutout Columbus before Friend surrendered the homer to Carson.
Relief pitcher Cesar Jimenez threw the last 0.2 innings of the top of the 13th for Lehigh Valley.
Guilmet retired the side in the bottom half of the 13th to earn the victory (4-4, 3.05 ERA). Friend took the loss and moves to 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA on the year.
The win improves the Clippers record to 49-53 on the season.
Columbus and Lehigh Valley will resume action on Sunday as Clippers left-hander T.J. House (3-9 5.15 ERA) battles it out with IronPigs southpaw Tom Cohchran (3.4, 4,98 ERA) in the final game of the series.
