Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

PUERTO RICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Carlos Moncrief (Gigantes de Carolina, RF): 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 K. Moncrief has a good night that hopefully represnts the beginning of a turnaround from his recent slump.  Even with this solid effort, his last ten games' slash line is still only .238/.238/.310.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)

Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS): 0-for-4, 1 E. Gonzalez continues to struggle as he goes hitless and picks up his tenth error of the LIDOM season (in 33 games).  His last ten slash line now stands at .216/.216/.297, all three numbers representing drops of over 100 points from his far superior season numbers.

VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)

Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, 1B): 2-for-5,  1 R.  I don't know what the telephone rates are between the various Caribbean nations, but it might be money well spent for the two aforementioned hitters to call Aguilar and get some tips from him on how to come out of a slump as he has done so quite well in the past week.  That said, I think the break between the LVBP season and Spring Training may do him some good.

AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE (ABL)

Ryan Battaglia (Brisbane Bandits, starting 1B): 1-for-3, 1 K. Battaglia picks up a hit and a strikeoput before being pulled from the game for a defensive substitution in the sixth inning.  This game is pretty indicative of his ABL season as a whole - neither good nor bad, just right down the middle.

Gonzalez, 22, is an interesting prospect, he's got positional flexibility and a bit of pop in the bat. Personally, I think he's likely to develop into a UTL type, but every team needs those guys so he has value. He could be a nice trade chip at a later point, particularly, with the Indians MIF depth. The Indians did land Scrabble with Juan Herrera last yr. so I imagine Gonzalez might net a decent return too.

I believe Gonzalez needs to learn plate discipline in order to get out of his current slump. When he was going well he was still striking out a lot and no walks. I believe that his recent struggles at the plate has also caused the him to have fielding issues. This season will find out if he is more than sleeper/under the radar prospect.
