Around the Farm: January 2, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Note: The Puerto Rico Winter League was off on Thursday.
Dominican Winter League
Carlos Santana (1B, Leones del Escogido): 1-for-4, K. From the looks of things, Santana may be the only Indians player left playing winter ball….and even his time in the Dominican playoffs may be limited. Because of that, Around the Farm might go by the wayside at some point this weekend and be packed away until March when the minor league spring games kick up. In any case, Santana continues to split time at first and third base and continues to contribute offensively.
Venezuela Winter League
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas): DNP. Aguilar is done for the winter in Venezuela. His Caracas team has already said as much and he is shut down to get some rest before joining with the Indians later this month. He had an MVP caliber performance this winter hitting .327 with 18 HR, 50 RBI and 1.000 OPS in 58 games, just monster numbers that will be hard for his Caracas team to replace in the playoffs. As a sidenote, his replacement for the playoffs Jesus Guzman went 0-for-5 with 2 strikeouts.
Toru Murata (SP, Caribes de Anzoategui): 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. Murata lived on the wild side in his first playoff start allowing 7 baserunners in 5.2 innings, but he limited the damage and was a third of an inning shy of a quality start. It looks like he will be one of the few Indians players to play the duration of the winter season through the playoffs…..although he got a late start in winter ball joining up with his team December 1st.
Australian Baseball League
Ryan Battaglia (C, Brisbane Bandits): 1-for-4, R, 2B, RBI, K. This was Battaglia’s first game action since December 22nd, and overall it was a solid showing. He once again made the most of his one hit by thumping an extra base hit, and now of his 17 hits this offseason an amazing 13 of them have gone for extra bases. That’s an insane ratio of extra base hits (13) to singles (4).
