Around the Farm: January 19, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Note: The Dominican Winter League was off on Sunday (they were off on Saturday as well) and no Indians played in the lone game in Puerto Rico (they were off on Saturday as well, too).
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LVBP) PLAYOFFS - DAY 18
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, DH): 1-for-4, 2 K. Aguilar has an off night at the plate as he picks up only a lone base hit, strikes out twice, and grounds into a double play. Even with this rough evening, Jesus still has a .341/.438/.683 slash line in 10 playoff games. For those wondering, his power numbers on the winter stand at 22 HR and 61 RBI in 68 games between the regular season and the playoffs.
Elvis Araujo (Aguilas del Zulia, RP): W (1-0 in the playoffs, 1-1 on the winter as a whole), 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP. Araujo makes the most of his second relief appearance of the round robin phase as he picks up the win after starter Wilfredo Boscan fails to go five innings. Araujo is all too familar with such situations this winter, it's just that during the regular season he was usually the starter who failed to go long enough for the win. Nonetheless, he has appeared in 13 games this offseason and thrown a much needed 26.2 innings of overall solid ball.
In Venezuela, the round robin phase of the LVBP playoffs has two days remaining. The Leones del Caracas (Jesus Aguilar) and the Caribesde Anzoategui (Toru Murata) both have a chance of reaching the Serie Final while the Aguilas del Zulia (Elvis Araujo) have been eliminated.
In the Dominican Republic, the Leones del Escogido has Carlos Santana and Enosil Tejeda and will begin the Serie Final against the Tigres del Licey on Monday, though no Indians are on their playoff roster. I have finally cleared up the schedule situation as MLB.com, LIDOM.com, and WatchESPN are all reporting the following schedule: The five guaranteed games will be played from January 20-24, with any if necessary games being played from January 26-29 after a day off on the 25th.
The Puerto Rican league's Serie Final began Sunday night with the Criollos de Caguas (Tyler Sturdevant) beating the Indios de Mayaguez (Roberto Perez) 5-1, Neither Sturdevant nor Perez played in the game.
The Mexican Pacific League (no Indians played in the entire league) Serie final is set between the Mayos de Navojoa and the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. Despite the lack of Wahoo's, I mention this league for two reasons: first, it sends a representative to the Caribbean series, which will likely involve Indians players. Second, it gives me an excuse to bring up their unusual first round playoff format, in which not only the three series winners advance, but also the loser who drags their series out the farthest.
In the Australian Baseball League, which has one weekend of play left (the ABL does not play weekday series'), the Brisbane Bandits (Ryan Battaglia and Mitch Nilsson) are the lone eliminated team while the Perth Heat (Ben Shorto) are the lone team to have clinched a spot, having clinched a bye to the Grand Final series as they are in first place by seven games with four games remaining.
