Around the Farm: January 15, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Dominican Winter League
Carlos Santana (Leones del Escogido, 3B): 1-for-3, K. A quiet night for Santana and the rest of his Escogido teammates in a game they won 2-0. He is hitting .259 in the playoffs, but most importantly he continues to get opportunities at third base. His continued primary use at third base, especially in the league playoffs which is a HUGE deal in the Dominican, is a good positive indicator of his play there to date.
Puerto Rico Winter League
Giovanni Soto (Gigantes de Carolina, RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K. Soto made a rare appearance in the ninth inning with his team down 5-2, one out and runners on first and second. He proceeded to walk the first two batters he faced, allowing in a run. Then he allowed a sacrifice fly to allow another run to score and then got out of the jam with a groundout to second base. While he did not allow any earned runs, he did allow both inherited runners to score.
Venezuela Winter League
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, DH): 2-for-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB, K. Aguilar ripped his third homer of the postseason and racked up his 8th RBI. He now has 21 homers and 58 RBI this offseason in Venezuela – roughly half as many games as he played with Double-A Akron last year when he jacked 16 homers.
Elvis Araujo (Aguilas del Zulia, RP): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR. Araujo continues to get some much needed work this offseason to make up some of the lost innings from another injury plagued season last year. With his Zulia team up 9-3 in the eighth inning, his manager was able to get him in a mop up role.
