In the 19th round of the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected right-handed pitcher Colyn O’Connell out of Dunedin High School (FL).
Date of birth: 7/19/1993 - Height: 6’5” - Weight: 200 - Bats: Right - Throws: Right
Quick take: O’Connell is a tall, slender right-hander out of high school that has tons of room to grow and get stronger. He features a high 80s fastball and throws two developing secondary pitches in a slider and changeup that both have the potential to be more. His delivery is inconsistent which affects his velocity and command, but he has some pitchability and definite projection.
Jeff Ellis: Colyn O’Connell is a big, 6’5” high school pitcher from Florida. In spite of his size he throws mostly in the upper 80’s from a ¾ quarters slot. His slider, changeup, and curve both look like potential average to above average pitches down the road. He has a college commit, but might be willing to at least listen to offers. He is an interesting player because of his size and a four pitch mix, the hope is that he would gain velocity as he matures and his pitches would improve allowing him to be a starting pitching prospect down the road.
