With their 10th round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians selected RHP Josh Martin from Samford University.
Birthdate: Dec. 30, 1989--Height: 6'5"--Weight: 234--Bats: Right--Throws: Right
Jeff Ellis: Josh Martin is a 6'5" pitcher from Samford University. Last year he was a 25th round pick by the Pirates. He throws in the low 90's and throws a curve and a changeup. He has put up good numbers this year in 100 innings he has a 2.96 era, 1.3 WHIP, and 3:1 strike out to walk ratio. He has some wildness to his game with 9 balks and 7 wild pitches this year. He leaves Samford the schools career wins leader. He is an athlete as a former football player, and a very smart kid, who went to Samford on a full academic scholarship not athletic. He has graduated from Samford with a degree in sports medicine.
Jim Pete: Martin has great size, and seems to be durable, but has delivery issues. As Jeff mentioned, these delivery issues have certainly hurt his control. He's touching 93 right now, but I can certainly see the Indians seeing him as a project worth taking on with regards to size, and a potential velocity bump with a fix to the delivery. He went 12-1 last season, has a projectable fastball, curve and changeup.
