In the 8th round of the 2011 Draft the Indians select left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley out of Gilbert High School (AZ).
Bats: Right, Throws: Left, Height: 6'1", Weight: 180, Date of Birth: 02/17/1993
Ranks:
Perfect Game: 259
Jeff Ellis: Stephen Tarpley is a left handed pitcher from the prep ranks in Arizona. He is maybe the best prep arm from Arizona. Tarpley is also a very nice athlete, continuing this trend for the Indians. He was a hitter and pitcher for his team this year and excelled in both areas. He is viewed by scouts as a pitcher. He has an arm that could add more velocity even though he currently sits in the low 90’s. He also looks like he could develop a plus breaking pitch. With his athletic ability Tarpley is another high upside player for the Indians. They are taking players with commitments to major schools and just going to try and sign as many as possible. Tarpley looks like he could be the rare high velocity lefty down the road.
