All that and more on tonight's edition of The Inside Pitch!
With the trade deadline now in the rearview mirror the Indians pulled out another dramatic come from behind win over the White Sox by a score of 6-5 on Wednesday night. Carlos Santana was the hero with the walkoff homer in extras and Corey Kluber once again had another very good start. The Indians enter August as the leader for a wildcard spot! The IBI's Michael Goodman shares his second thoughts...
Early on in the season, it looked like Jesus Aguilar was stuck. His power seemed to have deserted him, leaving him behind the eight-ball going forward. Fast-forward a few months and everything seems okay again with the first baseman. To read about how an adjustment made all the difference for Aguilar and find out everything you need to know about the night in the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik and go Around The Farm.
Resilience is defined as the ability to recover or adjust easily to misfortune or change. It wasn’t easy, but the Indians sure keep playing like it. Carlos Santana took a 3-2 pitch from ChiSox reliever Dylan Axelrod over the right field wall for the game-winning homer, sending Cleveland to their seventh-straight victory. Join Jim Berdysz as he recaps the action from Wednesday night.
Coming out of the all-star break, the Crushers are now 7-5, and they continue to push their way up the East Division standings. They are now just two games behind Southern Illinois for third place, and five games back of the division lead. The IBI's Kyle Ferrara catches us up on the week that was for the Crushers....
The next position to tackle in this series is that of designated hitter. This position has been surprisingly ineffective for the Indians over the past few years thanks to a mix of injuries and just plain lack of production. The major difference for this position is that we can look at it purely through the offensive prism as defense just doesn't matter, and the IBI's Jeff Ellis breaks it down to determine whether the Indians have improved or gotten worse at the position this season.
To Cleveland sports writers, Marc Rzepczynski might be the worst addition ever. The man otherwise known as Scrabble because of his tough name to spell and pronounce was dealt to the Indians on Tuesday, and the IBI's Jeff Ellis provides some flash analysis and thoughts on the Indians trade deadline pickup.
A string of losses punt a dent in the Lake County Captains’ week, but the team managed to pin a trio of close wins. The month of July resulted in a 12-14 record and it seemed the team couldn’t string wins together, with the exception of a six-game win streak the first week of the month. The IBI's Stephanie Metzger recaps the previous week for the Captains.
As this team has shown time and time again this season, there is no opponent or deficit they don’t believe they can overcome. They’ve had their ups and downs throughout the year, but they’ve never given up on themselves. That trend continued as Ryan Raburn and Yan Gomes delivered key knocks late in Tuesday night's game for the Tribe's sixth straight win. Join the IBI's Jake Dungan as he recaps an Indians 7-4 comeback win.
It may only be just three games, but outfielder LeVon Washington has dominated Single-A since being reassigned to Lake County. He had another huge night on Tuesday, and could he soon be on his way to Carolina? Plus, Erik Gonzalez and Joseph Colon each had stellar performances to lead Carolina to a win. The IBI's Arthur Kinney recaps these performances and more as he takes you Around the Farm.
City of lights, city of magic. Progressive Field once again lived up to its late inning heroics Tuesday night as the Indians came from behind to defeat the Chicago White Sox 7-4, sending the team to their sixth straight win. Ryan Raburn was the late inning hero once again and the Indians kept pace with the Tigers and Orioles for a playoff spot.
The Indians made a surprising move on Tuesday night optioning out right-handed pitcher Vinnie Pestano to Triple-A Columbus to make room on the 25-man roster for newly acquired left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski. Tony gives a quick recap of the move and makes sense of it.
The Cleveland Indians completed a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon. While the Indians had been rumored to be talking to the Cardinals for the past few months, this certainly wasn't the deal that folks were pondering. Instead of dealing away Asdrubal Cabrera for a potential starter, they dealt a low-level minor leaguer for a left-handed reliever.
The end of the minor league season is now in sight as it is just five weeks away, and in today’s week opening edition of Minor Happenings the IBI's Tony Lastoria takes a look at the dominating performance of Danny Salazar and how good he is and how the Indians are using him. He also explains the minor league promotion process with why some guys are not promoted when they may be playing well, and also provide lots of news and insights into players like Juan Diaz, Kyle Bellows, Tyler Naquin, LeVon Washington, Ben Heller, Casey Shane and more.
In his fifth part of this series, the IBI's Jeff Ellis takes a look at the Indians catching position over the past three years and shows how productive the position has been for them and how it has significantly improved this season. He also sheds light on what a crazy talent Carlos Santana has become and how he is no doubt a top five player at his position.
The Akron Aeros got some decent pitching over the past week, though a rough performance from the offense sent them on their way to a losing record. The Aeros lost four of their six games, dropping their record to 53-55. Akron is in fourth place in the Western Division, 5.5 games out of first place and five games out of the wild card. To find out all you need to know from the past week, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.
