Building the 2013 Cleveland Indians
Re: Building the 2013 Cleveland Indians
Hermie,
Completely agree the Tribe has to have prospects to move into the rotation and the guys they have a simply not ready. That said guys like Barnes and Kluber should be in the running for the 5th spot. Barnes could end up back in the pen again IF the Tribe decided to move on from one of Sipp or RPerez. Perez being arb. eligible and returning from shldr surgery could be the one to go. Sipp would be the cheaper of the two, that said there is a possibility the Tribe offers RPerez a deal similar to last yr at $2 M to retain him. Either way it's minimal risk to me, they have one yr of control remaining IF he rebounds maybe they could trade him at the deadline or simply take the investment and put it else where.
The Tribe simply doesn't have a serious number of prospects that are knocking on the door. The only way they stabilize the rotation will have to be through a FA signing or two OR by way of trades. Personally I think they'll look for a mid rotation arm or two while keeping an eye out on adding a lefty to the mix. The Tribe had interest in Francisco Liriano last yr and likely will again at the right price.

I think the Tribe could improve their rotation by hiring the right pitching coach. And either better game management from Santana or who ever is the primary catcher. Personally, I'd move Santana (because I believe catcher is a defensive first position) to the OF (especially RF if Choo is moved). Not sure anyone can fix Ubaldo but I don't think he's as bad as he was last year (but still not close to what we paid for).
Adding an arm would certainly help. I am also of the opinion that Barnes should be given every opportunity to start. This team is way too quick to move guys to the BP which is why they haven't developed many starters over the year.

Re: Building the 2013 Cleveland Indians
@rocky 55,
Actually, I'm not a huge Pagan fan but I think he could be a nice short term piece. Not to be double sided on this, I just feel he'd offer the table setter at a mid mkt price. He's got a little pop, some speed and solid D too. I see Pagan getting a deal similar to Crisp last yr BUT I think SF may be quick to resign him. I'd love to see the Tribe make a serious run at 1/2 of Anibal Sanchez, Edwin Jackson, Shaun Marcum, Michael Bourn, BJ Upton or Mike Napoli but doubt it happens, I was really pointing toward a table setter like Pagan bc I could see the Tribe trying to move Choo this offseason at the very least at the trade deadline.
I'm guessing the Tribe could spend $20-30 mil this offseason in FA depending on what else they do in arb. and trades. I'm about 90% certain they'll move Perez for a piece, question is what.
Kubel would be a nice add but hits LH if I recall. I've been focusing more on RH or SH bats myself, I liked Kubel last yr thought the Tribe might have some interest but I'm not sure the a tribe had interest. I'd love to see the Tribe snag a LH SP like Tyler Skaggs, I'd probably settle for Patrick Corbin too.
The way I see it the Tribe needs 1 anchor for the rotation and 1 for the lineup. I don't consider a guy like Pagan an anchor more of a very good player who is a table setter to replace Choo at the leadoff spot. Crisp could also come into consideration, I could see the Tribe trying to bring Crisp back or even trying to acq. Chris Young or Cespedes from Oak for ACab in a pkg deal. It could be more likely that ACab is moved this offseason than Choo. The Tribe will be fielding calls on both IMO, Choo will have the same or even better value (assuming he stays healthy) at the trade deadline. While ACab has 2 yrs of control remaining w/ a decent contract. A team that misses out on one of the other FA could come heavy after Choo too.

@daingean
Agreed, I think the pitching coach is a huge key for this club. Also, I like Scott Barnes and think he should be in the rotation, personally I felt they should of approached him a bit differently but with the RPerez injury they needed a LH bullpen arm. I saw an interview a mth or two ago with CA speaking highly of Barnes but he said he could be a nice bullpen arm in 2013. I thought that's ridiculous to write this kid off as a pen arm so qkly hopefully they haven't. Particularly, with the need for SP this club has.
I get the fact people see Santana as a plus C bc of his offense but I'm in for moving him to a corner OF spot (especially if Choo is moved) or 1b. Marson offers little on offense and is solid on defense too but it's more important the Tribe fill one of the other holes. It just seems they could fill C with a platoon type (Olivo, Shoppach, Baker) with Marson cheaper than they could fill LF/1b. The Tribe could then focus their resources on filling the other hole.

@Homer....
Buddy of mine in SF I was chatting with earlier today says that Pagan, through his agent wants $ 15MM / year.. While this sounds like a bunch of "bravado" coming off a very successful run to a World Series title..it's not outside the realm of possibility....
As far as moving Santana.. okay.. picka spot.. any spot..and KEEP him there.. There is no doubt in my mind that defense affects the way a player approaches offense...and vice versa...
Lacking good arms? or lacking arms to become good pitchers?.. The Indians have their share and then some of 'good arms'.. Good pitchers, now that's completely different kind of animal...

Amen on the importance of the pitching coach. Has to be someone from outside the org as the internals haven't proven to be able to develop starters. The importance of the coaching staff & manager to an org with limited resources can't be over emphasized. It's the only way, IMO, that you can develop/exploit the talents of every guy on your roster. Add a scouting staff that can bring in talent from whatever avenue possible & you have the basis for as much success as is possible for our situation.
I know, basic shit, but sometimes you just have to emphasize the basics. Having been a personal trainer for a number of years, I've seen countless times the value of simplifying & getting back to basics as the road to progress. Hopefully the FO will just try not to outsmart themselves.

Homer, Pluto suggested Kubel although I see the logic. He is a LH batter but isn't horrible vs LHP's, with a mid .700's OPS. I figured he'd be some Choo insurance, a LF to start the year who could be move to RF if Choo is traded. He spent significant time in RF in '11 with League Average defense with a decent arm. It's only a 1 yr fix though unless the FO tries to extend him. We will need more than just Kubel though.

Agreed they need more than Kubel, I'd rather see them go 'big' for someone like Justin Upton. I know he had a down season but also played through a hand injury. His numbers were down, but he's still got plenty of upside and would be a recognizable name to many fans. I get its unlikely but so was Francona.

I can see the Indians signing BJ Upton before they could swing a deal for Justin Upton that makes sense. And unfortunatly I don't see the Indians signing BJ Upton.

The Dodgers declined Juan Rivera's option. He could be a platoon type with a little versatility for the Tribe. Rivera 34, bats RH and could man some 1b and LF. He'd be a veteran presence and RH bat that the Tribe could have some interest in.

Wouldn't hate getting Kubel but personally would view him more as a Travis Hafner replacement at DH than a potentially Choo replacement should we trade him. Kubel obviously can play the OF but more a DH type to me still. Wouldn't hate him in LF though.
Agree on getting a pitching coach from outside the organization. Wet dream choice would be Dave Duncan. Set him up with a nice place right by Cleveland Clinic or University Hospitals for his wife...
Not happening, but one can dream. Wasn't he the Tribe pitching coach back when Barker thru his perfect game for us though?

Would it be crazy for the Tribe to offer Ubaldo Jimenez for Ervin Santana and $3 mil?
I would save the Angels $5 mil and the Tribe could try to bank on Santana pitching better in 2013, IF he did they could always move him at the deadline.

Net savings to the Angels would cover all or most of the Haren buyout.. makes sense.. both team may look at the "new" chance / location being a positive for getting back on track....

Santana and Haren both finished well over Sept. last season. Trying to land Santana would bank on his return to prior form which I would be more confident of than Jimenez returning to prior form. It would be an outside the box thinking for this team, which is exactly what they need IMO.

Wouldn't say it was crazy. Do think it's more likely that Santana bounces back vs Ubaldo. Santana did have a solid WHIP for a starter. Would have lead the Tribe starters in that category and was lower than Tony Sipp's even. That said, I'm kinda interested in seeing if a pitching coach from outside the organization could come in and possibly fix Ubaldo. That's crazier than you're idea I know, but I'm still holding on to that tiny bit of hope lol
That said...a real crazy idea could be Chris Perez and Ubaldo for both Haren and Santana (plus a lil cash). Could save $12M or so for the Angels which could be thrown at Greinke. Gives them a stabilizing force at the back of the pen pluse a cheaper inning eater that could bounce back. Highly unlikely to happen but could give the Tribe 2 pitchers capable of netting 1st round picks in 2014 if they were to bounce back...

Indians officially pick up option on Ubaldo and decline Hafner and Carmonandez
Also announce the coaching staff under Francona.
Alomar will be bench coach, Brad Mills 3rd base coach, Mike Sarbaugh 1st base coach, Kevin Cash bullpen coach, Micky Callaway pitching coach and Ty Van Burkleo hitting coach

Even better: A two-fer
Just to clarify:
Ubaldo Jimenez is due $ 5.75 MM for 2013.
Chris Perez is 'projected" to earn $ 7.2 MM for 2013.
Dan Haren is due $ 15.5
Ervin Santana is due $ 13.0 MM
The net savings to the Angels, if they agree to the "trade", would be $ 18.5 MM - $ 12.9 MM = $ 5.6 MM. Perhaps the Indians should ask for someone like Peter Bourjos as a sweetener to make this deal fully equal?..

No surprises here. Going to be interesting to see if the Tribe brings either of Hafner or Fausto back. Heading into this year I though there was a real good chance of Hafner coming back on a deal similar to what Thome signed with the Twins originally...but also thought he'd get in his typical 90-120 games and post an OPS over .800. Didn't even get to 70 games this year and OPS dipped below .800 for the first time since 2008. Wasn't a huge dropoff though and still draws walks so could be brought back but would sort of prefer the Tribe to look elsewhere.
No clue what the Tribe will do with Fausto...minor league deal would be what I'd offer, really can he expect much better elsewhere?

$15.5M + $13M is $28.5M, not $18.5M....the net difference is $15.6M (not counting the cash I mentioned, which I was assuming would be around $3.5M...hence the $12M or so savings I mentioneed). Even though you were probably being sarcastic, I actually wouldn't mind landing a guy like Bourjos in the deal, but that wouldn't really make the deal equal (would favor the Tribe more).

For the Indians to take on that kind of salary (essentially paying for Greinke), a player like Bourjos or even Kendrys Morales could be requested.. The Angels find themselves in that precarious spot of not wanting either guy back but not wanting to pay five million or so in buy out fees..

Haren and Santana (and CJ Cron and Bourjos) for Perez and Jimenez would make me really think. Of course the Tribe would be eating a lot of salary (about $ 16 Mil) but Wow that would really be an outside the box type deal.
The Tribe has to find something outside the norm IMO. That would definitely change this org. IMO and more than give the Angels what they want too.

Honestly don't think there'd be much thinking needed there, I'd do that deal yesterday. $16M is a lot for the Tribe obviously but they did offer $13M or so to Beltran so with some moving of salaries (Choo traded?) it's doable. Getting a power bat like Cron (even if his defense is attrocious) and CFer with the defense of Bourjos would IMO make taking on this $16M worth it.

For the Indians to take on that kind of salary (essentially paying for Greinke), a player like Bourjos or even Kendrys Morales could be requested.. The Angels find themselves in that precarious spot of not wanting either guy back but not wanting to pay five million or so in buy out fees..
Taking on $12M (what I suggested) is obviously a lot for the Indians but I just don't see Ubaldo having any more trade value currently than a guy like Derek Lowe had last winter. At around $5M he could be a BOR inning eater for a team but you don't get much than a C-prospect for him. Perez has value IMO but not great value as he's an overpaid closer (though most closers are overpaid). Getting 2 startering pitchers capable of going 200 innings and have very recent success in the AL is IMO solid value for Ubaldo and Perez. Again though, do not think the Indians would make such a deal as it's more a 'video game' type of trade but personally think it'd make the Indians much better in 2013.

You're right.. this is clearly a fantasy baseball type deal..but we're dealing with two guys who not so long ago.. were playing fantasy baseball... The PR impact of a move like this would make a LOT of people forget about just how really bad the Browns are (and yes, winning 2 of their last three is encouraging, but still, 2-6 is not exactly worthy of excitement, yet)..
Two former FOR type SP's for a top five closer in the AL (with vinnie pestano, his replacement, already in the fold & vinnie's replacement, cody allen, already in the fold) and an affordable SP that has lost his way not due to physical health reason..is a pretty decent deal. Adding $ 12 - $ 15 MM in payroll and a nice "fill in piece" would make this off season about as good as I would expect..
any one else like Hermie's idea?...

The Royals acq. Santana and cash for a 27 yo minor leaguer. Hmm... wonder if the Tribe had any interest.

I'm sure they'll say they kicked the tires...guess it all comes down to how much $ LA kicked in.
EDIT: Looks like LA kicked in 1 million. I would think 12 million is a bit too steep for the Indians to hope Santana would rebound.
It looks like the Marlins and Royals were after Santana

I'm name dropping here but Hisashi Iwakuma -RHSP from the Mariners becomes a FA on Sunday. IF he does not resign with the M's before Saturday he can't turn to Seattle until May.
Iwakuma posted solid numbers...
9-5 w/l. 3.16 era. 125 IP. 117 hits. 101 K. 43 bb. 30 games. 16 starts. 2 saves. 17 hrs.

Iwakuma cost the M's almost nothing last year too. With that kind of season, it's entirely possible his agent will be looking for a big pay day as he'll be 32 years old. This could possibly be his last contract of any length. The Seattle folks loved the way he progressed, especially in the second half of the 2012 season. I would expect the M's to resign him, but, he'd be a nice addition to any club.

The Tribe has claimed RHP Blake Wood (27) off of waivers from the Royals. Wood missed the bulk of 2012 and had TJ surgery in May.
2011 Stats...
5-3 w/l. 3.75 era. 69 ip. 66hits 62K. 32bb.
Btw, Zach Putnam was claimed on waivers by the Cubs.

I don't know too much about Wood, but it seems to me like the bullpen didn't really need more help. Smith, Allen, Pestano, Rage and Rogers are just fine as the righties. I don't see where Wood fits in unless they're really shopping Chris Perez. His 2011 numbers were really good, though.
I'm lukewarm on this one. I'm still wondering if there will be more DFA's for Rule V additions, as I'm only counting two spots for additions right now. There's not really any players that need to be added though, so perhaps that's a moot point (though I'd like to see Goedert added just so he's not a minor league free agent).

He's still recovering to my understanding. With CC Lee also rehabbing and potentially some turnover in the pen (Chris & Raffy Perez, Smith etc) adding depth is never an issue. He could be a DFA candidate later on anyway.

Yeah just a low cost bullpen option. Won't go into why I think the pen needed help, but as mentioned Chris Perez could be on the block this winter (or should/will be). Agree that Wood could just be a DFA candidate later, could sneak thru even. No harm in claiming him.

I actually like this move, low cost 3 yrs of control too. He could be ready by May / June. Wood was sitting 95 w/ his FB but had also been up to 97 in the past. Could be a guy that comes back as strong or stronger. Low risk / potential solid reward.
I could see Wood added to the middle of pen by summer giving the Tribe reinforcements and also cover WHEN / IF they move Chris Perez and Joe Smith.

I think we can say fairly safely ACab is on the move. I like the Rogers trade, didn't see or hear anything about it until now. Rogers was a low cost pickup would have liked to kept him but I get the move is more about filling other holes too.

Well there's you're backup SS.....or could be your new starter as think this makes it easier to move Asdrubal. Avilies played for Francona in Boston too. Gomes seems like that perfect 4th bench guy. Can play all over and allows you to DH Santana with less worries about making a move later.
Not a bad haul for a guy many people were upset at getting last year....

Hmmm... Where will ACab land now?
Arizona?
Oakland?
Boston?
NY Mets?
I'm hoping this is a move prior to another like...
ACab for Skaggs, Davidson & Chafin.

Whyinthehell would they trade Rogers? He did a really nice job with great peripherals.
Could this be a move to cover the Asdrubal to AZ trade? Aviles can man SS until one of the kids is ready.

Re: Building the 2013 Cleveland Indians
Agree with all of the recent thoughts about today's Indians trade of Rogers.
Let's see things realistically: the 2013 Indians won't win the World Series. So, getting a 31-year-old shortstop (played in 136 games with the Red Sox) really seems to set-up the possibility of an A-Cab trade. And why not if you can get something good for him? By the time the Indians are really good again...2014 or 2015 at the earliest...Cabrera will likely be gone any way.
Looks like Yan Gomes will be at AAA Columbus (Luke Carlin, after 2 years in the Tribe system is a minor league free agent).

Re: Building the 2013 Cleveland Indians
I think Homer has it right.. with the addition of Mike Aviles, the Indians have solved at least one and possibly two problems: The possible solution is a back up middle infielder who can play the SS position at or above Major League Average. The true reason behind the move may not have been revealed. With Aviles in the fold, the Indians have an adequate ML SS that will allow Asdrubal Cabrera to be moved. With the SS's on the market being so thin (does anyone really want Yunel Escobar?), having a trading chip like Asdrubal puts the Indians in a solid position to bargain..
Yan Gomes, as Hermie has said, is a good addition to the club or is a perfect 4th bench guy. Gomes has been groomed at a catcher, but can play just about anywhere. He's a solid catcher...
As far as losing Rogers, he'll be missed.. but it looks like there are more than an adequate number of replacements for him.

This. Pretty much just sold high on a guy that almost litterally came out of nowhere.
Interesting to see if Aviles is in the plans in case Asdrubal is moved, or if Hannahan, Donald and Lillinridge are for sure, all but gone.

If Acab is moved and Aviles is our everyday SS, guess this means Gomes and ? go into the 2013 season as the back-up plan for Chiz? Good move by the tribe IMO.

Donald can play 3B still so even if Hanny is DFAed you'd have a backup for Chiz other than Gomes.

Arizona? Other players {than Skaggs, Davidson & Chafin} to consider from the DBax should include Gerardo Parra as an immediately ready ML OF'er, Ryan Wheeler, Jake Barrett and David Holmberg. It would be a huge haul to acquire Tyler Skaggs Matt Davidson, & Gerardo Parra for Droobs.
Oakland? In addition to Chris Carter as an immediately available ML 1B, the Indians may consider Brad Peacock, The Michael's Choice & Taylor, Grant Green, Sonny Gray, and Blake Hassebrock. Brad Peacock with the Michael's would be su-weet, however, it wouldn't be a bad trade if one of them were replaced with Chris Carter..
Boston? Would represent what might be an odd trading partner. The previous history with Tito has to have some play in the decisions, however, trades with the Red Sox almost have to be "REALLY BIG TIME DEALS" for it to make sense for them as well as the Indians. That said, I doubt any trades come to pass here. If the Indians were willing to add Shin-soo Choo (and perhaps David Huff) to the trade with Asdrubal to the Red Sox, then their version of the "Killer B's" may suffice to satisfy both teams. Maybe not & probably not. The Red Sox would be getting an OF'er with a one year contract, two years of Droobs, their new SS that is better than anyone they've had since Nomar Garciaparra, and a LHSP that may or may not pan out.. For this trio of tribesman, the Indians would receive Xander Bogaerts, Matt Barnes and and possibly anyone one of Jackie Bradley, Bryce Brentz, Brandon Workman and or Brandon Jacobs. Personally, I'd prefer Henry Owens as the add in.
NY Mets? Other than Zach Wheeler as a potential FOR SP, the Mets are a team that the Indians should avoid. No one on their currently ML roster or their minor league system interests me.
St Louis Cardinal: Droobs would be a great fit here. Peter Kozma wasn't what the red birds had in mind going into the NLCS and they paid for it. The Cards have several prospects and players than are of signicant interest including Matt Adams, Michael Wacha, and Oscar Taveras. Those three and several others would be fine additions to the Indians system. Both Adams and Taveras are ML read right now and would be under team control for six plus years...
I'm hoping this is a move prior to another like...
ACab for Skaggs, Davidson & Chafin.
