Garko and Barfield to try the OF?

Wedge announced at a "town hall meeting" that he would try Garko an Barfield in the OF during spring training. I really don't understand this. Spring training should be used to stretch pitchers, and give time to prospects. I don't think now is the time to try this. The thought of Garko chasing a fly ball makes me,,,, well.. it leaves me speechless.
