Re: boston keeps going
let's say Saito can return to form, or atleast something just a little worse than that. This is their pen:
Papelbon
Saito
Delcarmen
Masterson
Okajima
Ramirez
I'm not sure who the 7th guy is, but that has the potential to be a very sick bullpen. Couple that with their rotation, solid defense and good offense, I'd say they're the team to beat in the AL.

if bucholz pitches well you could see smotlz end up in that pen also adding to the degree of sickness

I thought Mike Timlin was still lying around.
Depending on who is performing and in the rotation, I could see Wakefield rounding out the bullpen and being the longman in the process.

But who is going to be on the receiving end of all those pitchers? Josh Bard? I think the ship has sailed away for Varitek. His career is now headed south. How about Shop, err, no, I won't say it.

Well we know how well Josh catches Wakefield from his last stint with Boston.

Re: boston keeps going
It seems like every time the Tribe signs someone we lose a player (i.e.Aubrey) from the 40 man that may come back to bite us in the future. With Boston supposedly having such a well regarded farm system, who are they jettisoning to make room for these guys, and will they be eventually hurt by their strategy?

I'll have to find the links but I read the players that Boston designated for space to sign players have been snached up by other clubs.

From what I recall, Boston's 40-man was not full. Only guy designated is RHP Charlie Zink.

I have made the assumption that both of these players were on the Boston 40 man to be signed off waivers.

Rays Claim Dewon Day, Padres Take Virgil Vasquez

According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays claimed pitcher Dewon Day (off waivers from the Red Sox).
And the Padres snagged Virgil Vasquez (from Boston), as their (Boston's) Brad Penny signing was made official.

Re: boston keeps going
Red Sox roster was at 39.
Then they signed Penny, Baldelli, Kotsay, Saito, Smoltz?
They waived Zink plus 2 (noted above). So there should be at least one more exposed if you count Smoltz. 2 more, if they re-sign Varitek. I don't think the Smoltz signing is official yet.
