DSL is off to a 10-5 start. Tied with Mets 2 and Red Sox for the Boca Chica North lead.

It may still be in flux. Remember, the Scrappers have to have their roster together because they open tomorrow and have to travel to New York state for the game. The AZL Tribe (A-Tribe?) don't open 'til Monday and are at home (and even an away opener would only be across town at the worst).

By the way, Tony, any word on which home games are at the complex and which ones are at the Goodyear Ballpark this season?

Also, for anyone who's looking for a current DSL roster, save yourself the aggravation. There's none to be found on the web. The milb.com roster is it (the DSL's spanish-language site is down) and it has 39 guys active in a league with a 35-man roster limit. I have contacted the DSL office in an effort to get the roster straightened out. I will report back here (and on the transactions log) if successful.

I have the home dates for AZL outlined in the book, though don't have it handy at the moment.

And I should have MV and AZL rosters soon.

I know when they're at home. I was just wondering if you had the breakdown of when they're playing games on the practice field and when they use the big ballpark. It was the last two weeks at Goodyear Ballpark IIRC last season.

Roster for the team? They begin tomorrow night and the minor league baseball one is, I think, the roster from last year.

As expected, a heavy dose of Latin players on the AZL squad, much more than in previous years. Only 9 guys on the roster were born in the US.

Quick inspection shows me some interesting things:

1. No Diores Robles anywhere (including the DSL roster). He was probably, along with Aguilar, the most high profile of the hitters on the DSL team last year. Ditto for no Jose Cabrera. Ditto for Wally Bryan, Rolando Cariel.

2. No Oswell Munoz who is a high profile prospect playing this year for the 3rd year on our DSL team. I would have thought they would have brought him over once the AZL season started.

3. The following Latin guys are apparently skipping the DSL team altoghether and starting in the US: Jose Lopez, Felix Sterling (Latin?), Miguel Fuentes, Robel Garcia, Jorge Martinez (isn't he only 16 or 17?), Juan Romero

4. The following guys played for our DSL team last year: Cespedes, Encarnacion, Flores, Guerrero, Pereira, Pinales, Monsalve, Aguilar.

5. The following guys played for our AZL team last year and are returning: Colon, JImenez, Torres.

I cannot provide details on Robles, but he was released earlier in the year. Some things found by the US consoluate when doing his VISA this year, and subsequently released. Do the math.

The Indians are excited about this team in Arizona as any of their farm teams. Lots of upside. I'll be honest, I know very little about all of these guys since many are from the DSL and many are first year pros. They have taken a VERY aggressive approach this year with the team by loading it up with tons of 16-17 year old Latin kids with lots of upside. Almost all of these kids have never, ever played a professional game in their lives, so tonight they are playing in their first pro game. They know these guys won't dominate, but they feel they won't be overmatched either. Performance and wins is not expected to be great, but they are expecting lots of development and growth with these guys. Call me intrigued.

Pitchers to watch: Sterling, Cespedes, Encarnacion
Hitters to watch: J. Martinez, Monsalve, Garcia, Romero

Tony- Any idea what is wrong with Araujo being on the DL again? He was on the DL all last year and I would think he would have been able to hit the ground running this year in the AZL. I hope this kid makes it back soon.

Unfortunately still hurt. May not pitch at all in Arizona, and if he does it will be later in the season. They are targetting Instructional League for him.

A few additions to the AZL roster. They aren't on the transactions log as they were added before the opener.

LHP Ryan Morris (#43) is with the A-Tribe on a rehab assignment

There's a third outfielder named Anthony Gallas (#28)

Ryan Gardner is #36

The milb.com roster has a few other discrepancies (Ehlert not listed, Pacheco not on the DL, and a different # for Colon), but I'm guessing that the roster Tony posted is correct on those points.

By the way, today's DSL game was against Mets 2, with whom the D-Tribe are tied for the Boca Chica Norte lead. Loser could drop all the way to fourth as the Red Sox were a half game back and the Dodgers one back going into today.

Wow,

Look at the stats for the Indians' DSL team:

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... bp&cid=616

A couple of interesting things:

1. Jairo Kelly was probably their highest profile (at least looking at how these guys were rated by VARIOUS sources last year) signee and look at how he was doing. Note also that Jorge Martinez, plazying in the AZL was their other high profile signee last year and he is also hitting over .300.

2. Look at the pitchers Tejeda and Munoz. Tejeda has a BB/K of 2/41 and Munoz is 0/40. What are the odds of a young player, especially in the Dominican where there is really no organized baseball for amateurs, having this kind of control and, given that they are both close to a K/IP of 1.5/1, command and stuff? Note that Munoz, along with Elvis Araujo, were our two high profile signings of a couple of years ago.

Don't know much about Tejeda or Erik Gonzalez, an outfielder who is hitting close to .400 but they look like keepers, too.

Given that our team in the DSL tends to hover around .500 historically and there are a few, guys who normally have eye-popping or even very good stats, this team seems significantly better, talent-wise, based on stats, than any previous DSL team I have ever seen with the Indians. Tony, is that the Indians' feeling, as well?

Yeah, whenver I talk about the Latin kids in the DSL and AZL, they are always excited about the upside of this group. A lot more than in previous years.

Hey Rob...I think Ryan is in an unfortunate numbers game as there are no starting spots open in Akron or Kinston. I think what may happen is he eventually goes to Kinston and piggybacks with someone (Mahalic?). Outside shot on going to Akron and piggybacking and taking the spot of Hagadone if he is out for awhile.

In the, I had to laugh department, I am not motivated enough to stay up until midnight to look at the AZL box score in the evening, so I look the next morning. Well, when I looked at the box score this morning on MiLB.com I noted that there was a little movie camera icon in that box score indicating that the game was broadcast live over the internet. I was amazed. However, when I looked at the live game offerings for yesterday that game wasn't there so it must have been a typo.

Still, 5 years ago you couldn't watch hardly any, if any at all MiLB games on the internet so, in a year or two, maybe we will be watching AZL games from live web cams and then, eventually, have play-by-play.

Just thought I would relay that funny story of MiLB being prophetic, accidentally and incorrectly.

Stop the presses. In the DSL Oswell Munoz walked his first batter in throwing 5 shutout innings yesterday. He now was walked one batter in 32+ innings with 46 Ks for a ridiculous 46:1 K:BB ratio.

Does he have a visa problem because I would have guessed he would have been in the AZL based on his performance last year?

Wow, 17 innings last night. When I checked before I went to bed they were just starting the 9th.

These types of games provide some interesting lines:

Monsalve was 0-9 with 6 Ks. Ouch!!!!!!! I know they call 4Ks in 2 ABs the golden sombrero (sp?). I think we will have to come up with a new name for this. How about the Monsalve sombrero (you know, like the Mendoza line).

Pretty sure you mean 4 strikeouts in a 9inning game....not 2 ABs. 5 strikeouts is sometimes called the platinum sombrero. No major leaguer has ever struck out 6 times in one 9 inning game (though Smoak was going for it earlier this year lol).

Have been 8 MLers who have struck out 6 times in an extra inning game, most recently Geoff Jenkins in 2004.

ha, and crazy as it sounds, Russ Laribee struck out 8 times, or a double golden sombrero, (though seen 7 listed as the record too) in a 33-inning minor league game back in 1981.....going 0-11. Though in his defense, did have a sac fly in the 9th that tied the game at 1....though in hindsight, he may wish the game would have been over after 9 innings lol. And even better......Laribee was the designated HITTER in that game for Pawtucket :s_rofl

Agreed. I'm happy to see Reyes getting back into the swing (or pitch) of things.
For some reason I think one of Jake or Reyes will still be with the Tribe next season and pitching in the majors. One of those will pair up with Fausto to anchor the top part of the rotation and give our younger arms time to develop in order to take one/ both of those spots come 2012.

Interestingly, if Reyes is healthy, which he almost never is, I think he could give us just as much as Jake next year, at a fraction of the cost. When you are the Cleveland Indians I think you have to take chances like that. A top of rotation starter, though? I hope you were just kidding.

Let's get something straight - front of the rotation for a WS contender is a lot different from front of the rotation for a team with limited chance at the WILD CARD.

Is Westbrook (even in prime and healthy) a true #1? No. But he is very solid #3 and could be a #2 in the right situation.

The same can hold true for Reyes and he has started game 1 of a World Series (shutout win over Tigers).

While this year the rotation went Westbrook then Carmona, I could see Carmona then Reyes next year which would by default make Reyes a front of the rotation pitcher.

Agreed, without an ace we have little chance of doing more than squeaking into the playoffs in a weak division, and I don't think we have a weak division anymore.

Just saying Reyes COULD equal Westbrook, which is an interesting concept as you build your team for next year.

While I wouldn't expect it, I definitely think it's reasonable to think Reyes has a shot at replacing Westbrook. He is the only pitcher we have with World Series experience....and not only experience, but he started and won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series. He wasn't the Ace of that staff obviously (Carpenter still was)....but getting the ball Game 1 is still no small feat.

I think it would make him a pitcher in the front of a rotation, not a front of the rotation pitcher. But that's just a different way of saying what you're saying.

I'm surprised that anybody is viewing Reyes as a future starter in their rotation let alone some viewing him as our #1. I personally will be surprised if he isn't DFA'd or traded before next season starts. He's simply nothing special - a BOR at best type pitcher. We have plenty of those.

Reyes replacing Westbrook? You are talking about the same Reyes who was deferred and cleared it. You are talking about the same Reyes who couldn't come back and become a starter for the Cardinals. You are talking about the same Reyes who hasn't pitched in a year. We may need him in our rotation but I see Carrasco as having a better year next year and that isn't saying much.

Seriously, he may be a reliever or 5th starter. But, from a veteran type pitcher, he has started 52 of 67 games while Laffey has started 48 of 74 games. Laffey has a 4.5 ERA to 5.12 ERA for Reyes. Why not have Laffey as #2 (similar pitcher to Westbrook) ... Sorry for sabotaging this thread ....

But, another question, why not start Reyes rehab in 15 or so days instead of now? In 30 days, we will need to sit him down with a new injury or cut someone from the 40 man if we can't trade Westbrook, Wood, Parelta, ... (and/or get no one on the 40 to replace them). He ain't going to pitch well this year ... why not time it when Sept roster expands?

Personally am hoping the Indians wise up and send Laffey back to the pen eventually. Yes, he's done ok the last few starts but we NEED lefties in that pen with only Perez and Sipp there.

And I think some of us (myslef included) should have worded this better. By 'replacing' Westbrook he doesnt have to necessarily pitch as our #2 starting pitcher. Masterson or Talbot could do that with Reyes being the #4/5. Just saying he can take a rotation spot as oppopsed to paying Westbrook $3-4M to come back next year.

As far as his rehab. Don't think the 40-man will be that huge an issue come mid-to-late August, but we'll see. Think the bigger issue is seeing as soon as possible if Reyes even has anything left in him. While there isn't a ton of time to evaluate him this year, even a few starts can give you some idea of what you have with him. :drinks:

Jason Knapp made his season debut for the AZL Indians yesterday working a perfect inning with a K.

Good to see.

Phenomenal news. Hopefully there's still time for him to make it to an A-ball affiliate before the season runs out.

Check it out. So far through 2 innings tonight Knapp has given up no hits walked 1 and struckout 4. Exciting to see.
