Unfortunately, the only thing to say about MV is that it is a bad, bad baseball team. Those wins at the beginning of the year may be the high point of the season.
One person told me though that the MV team may be the worst minor league team they have put together at an affiliate in a decade.

FYI, Toregas has some minor back pain. Nothing serious.

Tony, will the Indians add some vets from independent leagues to help this team, like an Ole Sheldon? I presume the folks who attend the games would like to win occasionally...
And I love the Seastrunk story... hope he becomes a star and plays as an Indian for twenty years...

I must say, I have low expectations for the way the current team is constructed. However, I'm more interested to see some guys once they sign what they can do. So, we'll see later in summer what happens.

Unlikely they fill in with independent league guys. I think reinforcements are going to come from some draft signings they will likely make over the summer (Tyler Holt, LeVon Washington, etc).

Hey guys, sometimes there is a price to be paid for way the organization does business. I know many of you are great fans of MV but this is their year to take one for the organization. There is a price to be paid for the success of our full season teams. MV is that price. Ordinarily, there would be talent coming from below or signees but that is not the case this year. We signed college players last year who have gone on to full season teams if they had any talent. In the case of our organization, we are low on position talent even in A ball. What we got is lots of pitchers but that does MV no good. The true talent in this years draft won't sign until August because they will be over slot which does MV no good. Suck it up! There is always next year.

A possible solution I was thinking about last night is to run all the rehab guys through Mahoning Valley. Noting the success Toregas had makes me think that using it as a mandatory stopover in rehab would help this team both in record and in attendance. I can see it now:
"Now appearing, for one night only, Asdrubal Cabrera.

Good idea, maybe Knapp, Rondon and Reyes for a big weekend series.

One thing about catching the Scrappers too early in the season is that you can miss some the picks that sign a little later. There aren't really many amazing prospects coming up from the AZL team this year. I know last year I made sure I saw Clayton Cook, but I don't see a pitcher like that this year. Maybe Giovanny Urshela will be that guy for this year's MV team. Who knows, Carlos Moncrief might take off as well with the position change.

very impressed with RHP alex kaminsky last night vs. batavia. what a way to start his professional career. nice to see a local ohio kid have success with the organization. seems to me we had a pretty good pitcher also out of wright state university a few years ago named brian anderson.

I was there as well. Very impressed by Kaminsky as well as Urshela's glove work and Burnette's power.
By the way, Burnette has 2 of the Scrappers' 3 victories this season.

Perfection through 8 now - Batavia pulled their starter after 7 innings - not even perfect games can get in the way of protecting young pitchers.

Moises Montero singles to break up the perfect game with 1-out in the 9th.
Scrappers still get shutout 3-0 as Alex Kaminsky allows his first runs of the year.

I was at the game tonight... Scrappers didn't hit many balls hard, the hit by Montero was nearly caught on a lunging attempt but no doubt that it was a hit... small crowd on a chilly night, the Batavia starter got a nice curtain call ovation after he was relieved.

Here's a link to the MiLB article on the game:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news ... &fext=.jsp
This team has been amazing mostly because they are getting amazing starting pitching. I know this is only rookie ball but it IS advanced rookie ball and we have seen many other pitchers come through here with middling stats who went on to have success at upper levels. Jensen Lewis and Ryan Edell from 2005 fall in that category. Also, in 2006, Josh Tomlin put up interesting stats (2.09 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 0.9 K/IP) and look where he is now.
So, while there are numerous other stories of first year guys at MV who put up good stats and then faded away, there is hope here. Mirabelli seems to excel at getting late round and NDFA finds. Let's hope these guys are the next wave.
7-7....who woulda thunk it?

From Minor Happenings last Saturday:
http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2 ... st-at.html
Left-handed pitcher Elvis Araujo is still recovering from an elbow injury which sidelined him for all of the 2009 season. There is no timetable on his return, though he may just be shut down until Instructional League in the fall.

the scrappers starting pitching has been clicking on all cylinders, with Rayl, Kaminsky, Dew and now Cooper having outstanding performances to start the season, and have been carrying the club thus far. also Kirk and Ehlert out of the pen have been outstanding. when the hitting comes around on a consistent basis, this will be a very dangerous team to be reckoned with.

Burnette 0-5 with 4K today. Ouch. This offense is still struggling quite a bit.

Coming to you from Mahoning Valley.. I talked with ACab, as best I could because his English is quite frankly horrible. He said his forearm feels "alright" and it should be good to go in a week or two. He called me Angel and not Andrew... :|

another outstanding start tonite by alex kaminsky for the scrappers. held down the brooklyn cyclones the top offensive team in the ny-penn league to 2 hits over 5 inn.. 2 runs scored on a hr that fryman thought was a foul ball it sounded like. he has now put together 6 consecutive quality starts to begin the season. we need to try and get that bullpen straightened out now.

Kaminsky earned my pitcher of the week honors. The starting pitching has been pretty solid for the most part, but man has the 'pen been a mess. And the hitting... non existent.

Interestingly, like Herrmann and other low, or non-draftees (remember they said that scouts thought Barton would not sign because he was too smart and wouldn't want to play ball but, instead, go to work in industry or at NASA) there is usually a back story when a guy like this comes in and has success.
It sounds like a good interview byTony, no?

alex kaminsky with another dazzling effort sunday vs. state college, but the scrappers could muster no offense and he is the tough luck loser 1-0. he went 6 inn. allowing only 4 hits, 2k's, and 1bb. kaminsky(4-2) retired 12 batters in a row at one point, before he allowed the run with 1 out in the 6th inn. he lowered his ERA to 1.96 over 41.3 inn. pitched, which is 5th in the ny-penn. league. this kid looks to be a real find for the indians. reichenbach and ehlert followed him with 3 perfect innings to finish the game off. this team really needs some help on the offensive side, what a struggle to score runs. the starting pitching has been very solid for the most part though.

For the most part, the starting pitching has given quality starts. Last week, all seven games the starters threw quality starts. But the two major problems is the 'pen, but even more so, the offense.

Re: 2010 Official Mahoning Valley Scrappers Thread
Worst hitting team I have seen in the organization in quite some time. In fact, from Kinston on down the position player talent from a hitting perspective is not very good. We need some infusion of higher impact talent there, and hopefully that comes with some of the still unsigned 2010 picks, Latin signings from the last two years, or trade.

That is one of the reasons I want only low A position players in any trades we make. I think position players are easier to obtain than pitchers and we definitely need some.

I agree with both of you 100% but the old adage "be careful what you wish for" really applies because the only thing we have got is our pitching depth. Nobody is going to want the castoffs but I think more than a few teams would like some of LH starter depth. That could be a slippery slope.

Went to Scrappers game in Batavia tonight but only could stay for three innings... Jesus Aguilar playing 1B tonight! Urshella homered and Dew looked pretty good. MV has a pretty pathetic line-up but maybe Aguilar will give the offense a boost.
