Kelvin Diaz
Tony-
Any updates on the mythical bigfoot 3B by the name of Kelvin Diaz. Were his visa issues finally closed out. We heard that he was on the list to attend the instructs in AZ but never heard anything since then. Perhaps some of the minor leage callers you get on your weekly show can advise if this "bigfoot" has ever been seen stateside.

Re: Kelvin Diaz
His stats declined quite a bit between 2007 and 2008, not just his power and batting average but his BB/K rate too. While he still is relatively young, you need to keep in mind he was generally playing with and against younger players this past season (and I wouldn't be surprised to find he is a bit older than previously reported too).
This past season, nine of his teammates were only 17, while Diaz "officially" turned 21 this past August.

Art,
I think we need to remember that this guy is probably disheartened, frustrated and bored. You would expect his numbers to decrease. Heck, Brandon Phillips' numbers decreased his second year in Buffalo and we know how that turned out.
These guys know the real money is in the US and in the majors and to be stonewalled like Diaz has been has to just be crushing to a guy who may have one sellable tool to get out of the poverty of that island: baseball skills. To not be allowed to use that tool to make money because he was born at home and not at a hospital (meaning he can't verify his age and, so, can't get a visa to work in the US) has to be tearing him apart.
When I interviewed Lino Diaz a couple of years ago he said Kelvin Diaz would have been at Lake County had he been in the US at that point but only because his defense at third was lagging behind his hitting, which was Kinston-worthy at that point. If you honestly believe Lino then Kelvin would probably be in Kinston right now and could move fast if he can play in the US this year.

Re: Kelvin Diaz
He does not exist.
Seriously though, nothing on him. But, I will try and see what I can dig up on him and if he actually attended the Instructional League (you would have to assume if he was on the roster he did attend though).

Many of us will continue to hope that his attendance at the Instructs will mean the visa issues are behind him and the regular minor league career will begin for him.
I wonder how many years until he is up for the Rule 5??
With his luck its after the 2009 season.

According to Scout.com he signed on June 1, 2005 which WOULD make him eligible for the 2009 Rule 5 draft.

ha, yeah.....don't think it's that big a deal though.......can't really imagine a team taking a guy in the Rule 5 draft if he can't even get into the country full-time......kinda hard to be on the ML 25 man roster when you're not here, lol.

Re: Kelvin Diaz
If the kid bashes and smashes the ball (a la Goedert in 2007), through out the whole season and plays decent enough defense across multiple levels, who knows he might get taken.
I grant you it isn't likely but each team makes its own determination.
What if he performs very well for both 2009 AND 2010? He might avoid getting taken in Dec 09 but would be a tempting pick for Dec 2010. He could also force some other issues at that time.

Re: Kelvin Diaz
Does anyone know the 'date' of the 2009 Rule 5??
I've been at work on draft day the past few years and unable to follow along as much as I want to. Since I have to schedule time off now (for 2009), I might as well look to have that day off.

nah did we learn nothing from the rule 5 draft and my stat review, bats dont get taken hardly ever especially one that is that raw. Unless he hits 500 I think he would be safe

2009 Winter Meetings are in Indianapolis from Dec 7-10, so Rule 5 Draft is Thursday Dec 10th.
2010 Winter Meetings are in Orlando, FL from Dec 6-9, so Rule 5 Draft is Thursday Dec 9th.

You know, it might be interesting to head over to those meetings to experience it in person.
Indianapolis is close enough for a short hop trip......
Something to ponder........

Carneige,
I think we need to meet for a drink or 4 if we end up at the meetings in Indy.

Yeah that sounds good, there are some good choices in downtown Indy, if anyone else is planning on being in town during those meetings and want some tips on where good places are, let me know.
