Indians Prospect Insider

July 19, 2009   (0 comments)
This is mere speculation here on my part, but with an off day on Monday we could (finally) see some changes with the Indians major league roster.
Going off what a high ranking official in the Indians organization told me two weeks ago where there would be some roster changes after the break, this would be a good time for those changes. To go a step further, I don't think it is just a coincidence...

Ghosts of Prospects Past: Rod Nichols
Cry me a river, Cliff Lee (5-9). Sure, anybody would agree that the Tribe ace has been the victim of some offensively inoffensive run support this year. An ERA around 3.40 ought to get a pitcher to the .500 mark at the very least. Still, historically speaking, there is at least one former Cleveland hurler who would look at Lee

Clippers rally past Syracuse 6-3
The Clippers rallied from an early deficit to defeat Syracuse 6-3. Chuck Lofgren settled down after a rough start, lasting seven innings on three runs and six hits. He allowed two walks and recorded two strikeouts.
The Chiefs wasted no time scoring on Lofgren. The first three batters in the game scored after back-to-back doubles by Jorge Padilla and...

Indians have supposedly released right-handed pitcher Masa Kobayashi today. The timing of this is interesting as it may mean a 40-man roster spot is needed to add a player from Columbus who is not on the 40-man roster who they want to promote to Cleveland (Andy Marte? Jordan Brown?). Or, maybe they need the roster spot to add some players they may be getting in a trade. Of course, it may be that they...

I did not mention this yesterday, but Low-A right-handed reliever Eddie Burns has been put on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury. Taking his place on the roster is left-hander Francisco Jimenez who has been promoted from the rookie-level Arizona League team out in Goodyear, AZ.
Jimenez has been interesting to follow in the early parts of the season. Not much is known about him at...

For this week’s Diamonds in Single A, I am going to take a look at Alexander Perez, a young pitcher who really burst on the scene this year and just last week got his first start in high A.
Perez was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2007. He was only 17 years old when he signed the deal, so he actually spent that first season in the Dominican Summer league. Alexander throws a fastball,...

Rondon pitches Clippers to another win
The Clippers held on to beat Syracuse 5-4 at Huntington Park. Hector Rondon provided another strong start for the Clippers, pitching six innings and giving up only one run on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Clippers got on the scoreboard in the second inning, exploding for five runs and sending nine batters to the plate. After...

he Indians re-activated catcher Carlos Santana and outfielder Nick Weglarz on the Double-A Akron roster today. Infielder Jerad Head has been placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder sublux. Santana and Weglarz were both placed on the temporary inactive list last Saturday to account for their participation in the Futures Game. Head was hurt last night diving for a ball in left field in the...

Just an FYI, I was on SportsTalkCleveland's radio show "The Leadoff" hosted by TJ Zuppe this morning. We talked prospects for about 20 minutes. Here is a link to listen to or download the interview:

The interview goes for about 20 minutes, and we touched on most of the players near the major league level like Brantley,...

Minor Happenings: Herrmann Shows Progress In Bullpen Role
"Minor Happenings" covers the important developments and news in the Indians farm system. While most of the information in this report is from my own research and through interviews I have conducted with organizational personnel, some information in this report is collected and summarized from the various news outlets that cover each team.
I'm in the middle of a four affiliates in nine days...

Clippers beat Syracuse
The Clippers returned from the All-Star break with a 7-2 win over the Syracuse Chiefs. Fausto Carmona pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven without allowing a walk.
Tony Graffanino started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer. Andy Marte launched his 12th home run of the season to give Columbus a 3-0 lead...

Been hammered with e-mails asking why catcher Wyatt Toregas and third baseman Andy Marte were absent from the Triple-A All Star game last night. Toregas was out the last few games before the break because of a concusion he suffered while catching and was held out of the All Star break to help ensure he is 100% for the second half. While it was not publicly announced, it was known going into the game...

Finally Healthy, McGuire Shows His Talent
Players taken in the late rounds of the First Year Player Draft generally fall into three categories: 1.) a late round flyer on a high-priced high school talent all but certain to go to college, 2.) a player selected and signed as organizational depth, or 3.) a player who has some recent injury concerns which resulted in a freefall in the draft.
The latter applies to High-A Kinston right-handed...

Columbus and Akron were off due to their All-Star breaks.
Keys only allow four hits in win over K-Tribe
Frederick LHP Rick Zagone and RHP Eddie Gamboa combined to set the side down in order in every inning except the fifth and the ninth, as the Keys defeated the Kinston Indians Wednesday night, 5-1.After tossing four perfect innings, the K-Tribe got to Zagone in the fifth. Kinston 1B...

I've often been asked by the diehards whatever happened to right-hander Gregorio Rosario, the pitcher the Indians acquired from the Seattle Mariners for Jason Davis in 2007. Rosario was just 18 years old when he was acquired and was picked off the Mariners Dominican Summer League team, so there was some intrigue with him due to his long projection and why the Indians would even be interested in him...

Just a quick note that our radio show "Smoke Signals" is off for the All-Star break this week. We had some things going on to where we could not air it on Thursday this week and were going to air it tonight, but with nothing really new to talk about and me in Mahoning Valley tonight we decided to cancel it and pick it up again next week. I leave for a near two week trip to Kinston and Myrtle Beach...

I got an e-mail this morning from Jay over at LGT asking if Lonnie Chisenhall's consecutive errorless streak was still alive. In all honesty, I was not aware of the errorless streak though was aware he is still in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak. So, my curiosity was more than piqued.
After researching it Chisenhall in fact is in the midst of a 27-game errorless streak at High-A Kinston....

Columbus and Akron were off for the All Star break.
Chisenhall Homers, Kinston Falls 7-5
Lonnie Chisenhall provided the early pop in the top of the first inning for his second homer in as many days, but Frederick would comeback to win a see-saw affair 7-5 to even up the series at one apiece.
Chisenhall (2-for-5) extended his season long hitting streak to 14 games with his team-leading...
