The Kinston Indians have swept the Carolina League’s Weekly Awards as Matt Brown is the Player of the Week and Kelvin De La Cruz is the Pitcher of the Week in the Carolina League!
K-Tribe outfielder Matt Brown was just announced as the Carolina League Hitter of the Week hitting .457 (16-35) with six runs and 4 RBI last week for Kinston. The Wichita State alum is currently tops in the Carolina...

Clippers earn first Huntington Park victory
The Clippers didn't have to wait long for the first win at Huntington Park. Jack Cassel pitched six innings and Matt LaPorta hit the first Clippers home run to highlight a 7-5 victory Sunday afternoon over the Toledo Mud Hens.
Josh Barfield, in his second game as a Clipper, led off the bottom of the first with a single and would later take...

Today, advanced Single-A Kinston officially activated left-hander Ryan Miller who got the start in place of lefty Kelvin De La Cruz who was sent to Single-A Mahoning Valley (paper move, he is still in Kinston). Apparently, De La Cruz is okay but the Indians staff has taken precautionary measure to sit him for a start or two after he tweaked his elbow in practice a few days ago. This is certainly...

Defense Is Thompson's Hallmark
For Lake County shortstop Mark Thompson, coming back is not so bad.
Thompson, 24, just started up his second season about a week ago with the Indians Single-A affiliate in Lake County, and while it may have been a surprise to some to see him return there to start this season, he is taking it in stride and happy to be a part of the team.
"Nothing surprises me, it is baseball," said...

I was at the opening of Huntington Park today and the official beginning of Cleveland Indians baseball at the Triple-A level in their home state's capital.
Wow, what a day. What a ballpark. The only downer on this day was the final score with Columbus on the losing end 3-1. But the real winners today were the Indians, the city, and especially the fans. Not only has the Indians affiliation re-energized...

A couple quick Columbus updates:
- Right-hander Greg Aquino was taken out of the game before even throwing a pitch last night. He is suffering from some shoulder stiffness and is day-to-day.
- Infielder Josh Barfield has 72 hours to report to Columbus, though should be there today. He is expected to get regular playing time and will play second base and outfield.
- Second baseman...

I'm looking into adding some sort of scoreboard to the site specific only to the Indians affiliates. If anyone knows a way to do this or even how to make a widget or something that can accommodate this, please email me at tlastoria@indiansprospectinsider.com. I have zero tech knowledge on how to do this, but I felt it was worth asking about since it would be a nice addition to the site.
Also,...

Clippers Rally Late, Lose 5-3
Columbus staked Toledo to a 3-0 early, a lead which held up until the 7th inning when Columbus put one on the board on an Andy Marte RBI triple.
After allowing a run in the bottom of the 7th inning, Columbus came right back with two runs in the 8th thanks to two Michael Brantley steals which setup a Matt LaPorta RBI single. Michael Aubrey followed with...

The Indians re-assigned left-hander Ryan Miller to advanced Single-A Kinston today and activated left-hander Anillins Martinez. Martinez is a bullpen guy, so another move should be coming down the pipeline soon to add a starter to the Lake County rotation and to remove a reliever. The two most likely choices to fill the open spot in the Lake County rotation are right-hander Danny Salazar or left-hander...

The Aeros lost a heartbreaker to the Bowie Baysox last night by a final score of 2-0. Frank Herrmann started for Akron, and was the hard luck loser giving up one run on three hits in 7 innings. One of those hits was a fairly routine flyball to center by Bowie leadoff hitter Paco Figueroa that Aeros’ CF John Drennan lost in the lights for a triple. Two batters later, a sac fly to Drennan plated the...

Columbus Nips Toledo 2-1
Columbus used some excellent pitching combined with some timely hitting to squeak out a 2-1 win in a tightly played contest against Toledo. Right-hander Tomo Ohka's second start since slipping into the rotation for the departed Aaron Laffey was a gem as he went 6 shutout innings and allowed 5 hits, 1 walk, and had 4 strikeouts.
Lefty Tony Sipp battled through...

Minor Happenings: De La Cruz, Rondon Off To Hot Starts
"Minor Happenings" covers the important developments and news in the Indians farm system. While most of the information in this report is from my own research and through interviews I have conducted with organizational personnel, some information in this report is collected and summarized from the various news outlets that cover each team.
The Indians season is already over a week old, and...

Infielder Jared Goedert was placed on the Double-A Akron disabled list today with a right oblique strain and Akron received C Armando Camacaro from Triple-A Columbus.
Goedert started at third base in each of Akron's first five games before departing midway through Monday night's contest against Altoona. The native of Concordia, KS was hitting just .154 (2-13) on the year but had drawn six walks...

Huff Leads Clippers To Win
The Columbus Clippers beat the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday afternoon 4-1. The story of the game was some timely hitting by the Clippers combined with a solid starting effort by lefty David Huff and an oustanding job by the bullpen to close the door.
Huff got the win and is now 2-0 on the season in his first two starts, but unlike his first start where...

Triple-A Columbus catcher Chris Gimenez was removed last night in the middle of the fourth inning after he was hit in the head with a bat. It happened in the moment of the game as Indianapolis' Robinson Diaz swung at a pitch but his back swing clipped Gimenez in the head pretty good. The collision of the bat to Gimenez's catchers helmet was enough to leave him bloodied and require a few stitches. He...

The Cleveland Indians today recalled LHP Aaron Laffey from AAA Columbus. He will start today, April 15 vs. the Kansas City Royals in KC. To allow room on the 25-man roster the Indians optioned INF Josh Barfield to AAA Columbus.
Aaron made his first start of the 2009 minor league season on Sat., April 11 in Louisville for AAA Columbus, a 5-1 win for the Bats (3.1IP, 6H, 5R/ER, 2BB, 1K, 60P)....

Indianapolis Sinks Clippers 13-6
Hide the women and children as it was not a pretty night last night for the Clippers as Columbus pitching allowed 13 runs (12 earned), 17 hits, 3 walks and 1 home run in what was a 13-6 loss. Starter Jack Cassel was feasted on by Indianapolis to the tune of 7 runs, 9 hits, 2 walks, and just 1 strikeout in 3.1 innings. Things did not get any better for lefty...

he Indians today activated right-hander Carlton Smith who was on the 7-day disabled list with a right shoulder impingement. He fills the hole in the bullpen with the departure of lefty Ryan Edell to Triple-A Columbus a few days ago. He was 12-6 with a 4.37 ERA at advanced Single-A Kinston last year and will pitch out of the bullpen in Akron. The roster is now full

It is a marriage made in heaven.
A marriage that saw the Cleveland Indians and Columbus Clippers come together last September to hammer out a deal to move the Indians Triple-A operation out of Buffalo, NY into the Indians home state, and state capital to boot. Football may be king in Cleveland and Columbus, but now they also share another common bond: Indians fever.
The 2009 season...
