NEW BRITAIN, CT. —  A pair of triples from Joe Wendle and Alex Lavisky plated three runs and helped the RubberDucks earn a win on the road at New Britain, 5-3.

Akron was the first to get on the board in the top of the third. Wendle hit a two-out three-bagger that brought Ronny Rodriguez in from third and Tyler Naquin all the way from first to home, giving the team a 2-0 advantage.

The Rock Cats finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Nate Hanson singled in Tony Thomas to cut Akron’s lead to 2-1. RubberDucks outfielder Bryson Myles threw Thomas out when he attempted to stretch his hit into a double, ending the inning.

RubberDucks starter Will Roberts (5-6, 4.26) gave his team a much better outing then in his previous ones, as he earned his first win since May 5th. The right-hander gave up three earned runs on just six hits in 6.2 IP. He struck out seven and walked one.

Akron came right back in the top of the seventh, tacking on three more runs. Myles followed up his great assist with a leadoff double to left. After a Tony Wolters single, Rodriguez kept his big night going (3-for-4) with an RBI single to left that brought in Myles. Lavisky tripled two batters later, scoring Wolters. Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate by New Britain’s center fielder Mike Kvasnicka. Naquin then executed a pretty squeeze bunt down the left side of the baseline that brought in Lavisky from third.

After the RubberDucks took a 5-1 lead after the top half of the seventh, Rock Cats starter Taylor Rogers’ (5-4, 4.88) night was over. The left-hander allowed five earned runs on eight hits in seven total innings.

New Britain responded to Akron’s three runs with two of their own. Roberts surrendered an RBI double to Reynaldo Rodriguez after a wild pitch allowed Kennys Vargas to advance to second, leading him to score on the two-bagger. After striking out Kvasnicka, Roberts gave up another RBI double to Kyle Knudson, ending the right-hander’s outing with Akron’s lead now down to 5-3.

Neither team scored from there on, with great relief efforts from both bullpens. The RubberDucks’ Enosil Tejeda yielded one hit, struck out one, and walked one in 1.1 IP.

The Rock Cats’ Cole Johnson and Matthew Summers combined for three strikeouts and no hits in two innings of relief.

Shawn Armstrong got back to his usual ways, allowing just one single and recording his eighth save of the season.

The RubberDucks (36-21) will play game two of the series tomorrow against the Rock Cats (25-30). Akron starter is TBA and RHP Tyler Duffey (1-1, 4.15) will take the hill for New Britain. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night.
