ZEBULON, NC - Giovanny Urshela belted a three-run homer to left-center, and the Carolina Mudcats walked away an 8-5 winner over the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of 4,824 on Thursday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
The final shot capped a four-run comeback by the Mudcats (10-9). The loss drops Lynchburg to 10-8.
Dale Dickerson (1-2) was awarded the win by pitching the ninth inning. Juan Jamie (0-1) takes the loss after giving up the game winner.
The Hillcats pulled ahead 4-0 after five-and-a-half innings before a passing weather system halted play for 41 minutes. Matt Weaver drove in a pair with a second inning triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Ahmed in the fourth.
Ronny Rodriguez started the Mudcats comeback with an RBI double in the sixth. He scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Jeremie Tice.
Solo home runs by the Hillcats Weaver and Chris Garcia kept the Mudcats at bay through the seventh.
Justin Toole brought home a run with a ground ball after a triple by Carlos Moncrief, setting up the final rally. The Mudcats scored two runs with two outs in the eighth on a single by Moncrief and a fielding error by second baseman Tommy La Stella.
Anthony Gallas drew a lead-off walk in the ninth against Jamie. Delvi Cid reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, putting the winning run into scoring position. Urshela then deposited a two ball, two strike pitch over the left center wall for the final margin.
Carolina begins a three-game road trip against the Salem Red Sox Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Francisco Jimenez (2-0, 2.25) will start against the Red Sox righty, Brandon Workman (0-0, 8.31).
