Swisher placed on DL, Santana to concussion DL
The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have placed catcher/infielder Carlos Santana on the 7-day Disabled List with concussion-like symptoms, retroactive to May 26 and have selected the contract of catcherGeorge Kottaras from Triple-A Columbus. To make room on the 40-man roster for Kottaras they have designated right-handed reliever Blake Wood for assignment.
Santana began experiencing concussion-like symptoms after being struck in the head by a foul tip in his last start at catcher on Sunday, May 25 at Baltimore and did not play on Monday in Chicago. This marks his third trip to the Major League DL, his second career stint on the 7-day DL.
Kottaras, 31, begins his second stint with Cleveland in 2014. The Toronto, Ontario native appeared in one game during his previous tenure (May 3-6), becoming the first Indians batter in franchise history to hit a home run in each of his first two plate appearances with the club on May 4 vs. Chicago (2-3, 2RS, 2HR, 2RBI). Signed by Cleveland on April 3, he has appeared in 14 games with the Columbus Clippers (5-for-42, .119) around his four-day stint in Cleveland.
Swisher begins just his second career stint on the Major League DL, his first since May of 2005. He has been bothered by left knee soreness for much of the past week and was removed from Monday’s game in Chicago in the 8th inning.
Aguilar, 23, also begins his second stint in Cleveland, recently appearing in 4 games over a five-day span from May 15-19. He collected his first Major League hit and RBI on May 19 vs. Detroit, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI in a 5-4, 10.0-inning win over the Tigers. The Maracay, Venezuela native has spent the remainder of the year in Columbus, hitting .286 (42-147) with 11 doubles, 7 home runs and 19 RBI in 42 games (.386 OBP, .503 SLG, .889 OPS). During his tenure with the Clippers he is batting .322 (19-59) with 6 2B, 4 HR & 9 RBI (.444/.627/1.072) off left-handed pitching. He is currently 6th in the International League in OPS (.889), 8th in slugging pct. (.503) and tied for 9th in home runs (7).
