  • For years Justin Verlander has been the “ace,” of the Detroit Tigers and one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, however it has been a struggle for the former Cy Young the last two years. He got core muscle surgery in January and has not been the same ever since. In 17 starts this season Verlander is 6-7 with a 4.80 ERA and only 85 strikeouts. This would be his 3rd worse ERA of his career. He went six strong innings against a power laden A’s team after a rocky start. He gave up a Texas leaguer to Coco Crisp and then a solo shot to Brandon Moss before he settled in. Verlander only had 4 strikeouts but he felt his fastball and slider were his two best pitches today. This was his first win since May 30th.
