In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major signings or trades occurring on Tuesday, there are no "Top Stories." Instead, I will give a rundown of all of the day's news and notes.

Here are the stories from Tuesday, March 18th.

Tribe News

  • Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that Cleveland has yet to act on the multiyear extension offer Justin Masterson presented to them two weeks ago.
  • The Indians signed former top prospect Adam Miller to a Minor League deal on Tuesday. Miller was Cleveland's number one prospect for several years until a finger injury derailed his career. He spent last season with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Independent League.

Others News and Notes

  • Buster Olney of ESPN wrote that there is a strong feeling among some in the Phillies organization that the team would be better off trading shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
  • Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the Pirates are shopping right fielder Jose Tabata, as well as reliever Vin Mazzaro, who is out of options. Tabata, 25, has three years and $11.75 million remaining on his contract, as well as three club options.
  • Braves general manager Frank Wren told reporters that the team will revisit both Kris Medlen's andBrandon Beachy's rehab process from their initial Tommy John surgeries in an attempt to discover why both pitchers now appear headed for a second Tommy John procedure.
  • Jayson Stark of ESPN reported that the Astros have joined the many teams who are looking to the trade market for first base help.
  • According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has resumed reaching out to teams to get a feel for the interest level in New York first baseman Ike Davis.
  • The Padres signed former Indians reliever Hector Ambriz to a Minor League deal.
  • The Phillies returned Rule 5 selection Kevin Munson to the Diamondbacks.

Hermie,
Tabata interests me as well ,except that he's probably closer to 30 than 25.

I heard something privately from someone about four weeks ago that they were aligning well on a deal. At this point, with all the talk, and his demands, it would be odd for a deal not to get done.

tony - you seem very optimistic a deal will get done... is that a gut feeling or do you have some birds in your ear?

Jose Tabata is a guy that really intrigues me. RH bat that can hit both lefties and righties....doesn't make a lot but not exactly cheap either ($8.75M guaranteed over the next two years though has 3 team options as well). Not really needed now though if Bourn's hamstring becomes a big issue...he's a guy I would check in with Pirates on (proviced Morgan and/Frenchy haven't stepped up).

I don't see how the Phillies would be better off dealing Rollins....at least not with how they handled this offseason.

I mean sure, they could stand to get younger and moving Rollins would make sense...but they resigned a 35 year old catcher in Ruiz, signed a 36 year free agent OFer in Byrd, and signed a 37 year old SP in Burnett.

If this team's goal is to get younger they are doing a pretty terrible job. Rollins is old but still has some value and is one year removed from a 2+ win season at short. Unless they plan on signing Drew and think they can get something for Rollins but then again they need to convince him to waive his no-trade...something I highly doubt he does before opening day (smart move on his part, could eliminate a QO).

I don't see anything happening with Masterson in Arizona. History shows that the Indians like to finalize and announce these deals in the first week or two of the season when all media is present. Plus do it on an off day. And, I am unsure if Masterson's wife is with him in Arizona....but they may want to wait to do it in Cleveland so she can be there too. They have an off day before the home opener, so could see something done on that date.....or really any date during the opening homestand.
