In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Wednesday, April 2nd.

Top Stories

  • The Rays continued to lock up their young talent, agreeing to a six year extension with starter Chris Archer. The deal will guarantee Archer $25.5 million over the next six years. The extension will buy out all of Archer's pre-arbitration and arbitration years and includes two club options that could push the deal to eight years and $43.75 million. Archer was originally drafted by the Indians, but was dealt to the Cubs for Mark DeRosa. The Cubs then sent the young righty to Tampa in the Matt Garza deal.

Tribe News

  • Tribe manager Terry Francona hinted that utility man Ryan Raburn may see an increase in playing time this season. Francona said, "People look at him as a role player. I don't know that that necessarily has to be the case. He's got some thump in that bat."
  • Centerfielder Michael Bourn is scheduled to play in rehab games with Triple-A Columbus on Thursday and Friday. Bourn is eligible to return from the DL on Saturday.

Others News and Notes

  • According to Jim Callis of MLB.com, amateur draft pools and international bonus pools allotted under the new collective bargaining agreement will rise by 1.7% this year.
  • Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com reported that the Padres are nearing a deal with Cuban right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the deal is a Minor League contract that does not guarantee Despaigne a lot of money.
  • Former top-100 prospect Carlos Triunfel was claimed by the Dodgers off waivers on Wednesday. The 24-year-old shortstop was designated for assignment by the Mariners.
  • The Braves claimed reliever Pedro Beato off waivers from the Reds. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution said that Beato will go straight to Atlanta's active roster.
  • Lefty reliever Bobby LaFromboise, who was designated for assignment by Seattle, was claimed by the Padres.
  • The Angels claimed 27-year-old reliever Michael Brady off waivers from the Marlins.

Does anyone believe Chris Archer would be any good if the Indians didn't trade him and he eventually went to an organization that knew how to develop pitchers?

Definitely on board with Raburn playing more in 2014 than he did in 2013. I know he was banged up a bit, but 2013 saw him play in the 2nd fewest game and have the 2nd fewest plate appearances in the last five season for him (his miserable 2012 was the only one with less). Raburn isn't a guy I'd give 500-600 PAs too but had a very good 2010 with over 400 PAS and over 100 games and was a livable player in 2011 with similar playing time.

115 games or so with 350-400 plate appearances...I wouldn't be too opposed to that with Raburn.
