In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Tuesday, May 6th.

Top Stories

  • According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Pirates made top prospect Gregory Polanco a seven-year contract extension that would have guaranteed the outfielder $25 million. The deal included three option years. Polanco rejected the offer, which Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported was made during Spring Training. Heyman also noted that with the options added in, the deal would have been in the $50-$60 million range. Polanco has yet to make his Major League debut.

Tribe News

  • Michael Bourn was able to avoid the disabled list for the time being after passing his "tests" on his left hamstring on Tuesday. He remains day-to-day.
  • Manager Terry Francona told reporters that first base prospect Jesus Aguilar is not currently in the plans for the big league club. Although Francona noted that he is very encouraged by Aguilar's start at Triple-A, it doesn't appear that the big man will be seeing Cleveland anytime soon – barring an injury, that is.

Others News and Notes

  • Rockies' starter Tyler Chatwood will not have to miss the season, but will miss 6-8 weeks as he rehabs from a flexor strain in his right arm.
  • On Monday, the Mariners sent Opening Day centerfielder and leadoff man Abraham Almonte to Triple-A. Almonte was acquired in a trade with the Yankees and struggled in his first chance at a full-time gig. Seattle recalled outfielder James Jones to replace Almonte.
  • Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos told Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com that injured starter Brandon Morrow is expected to avoid surgery and could return around the All-Star break.
  • Reliever J.J. Putz was placed on the disabled list by Arizona with right forearm tightness.

Polanco is now the 2nd prospect this in the last six months to be offered a long-term deal before making his major league debut (Springer in Houston was as well). Going to be interesting if this is something that catches on....
