In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @AndrewIBI.

Here are the stories from Thursday, April 4th.

Tribe News:

  • The Indians announced that they have signed second baseman Jason Kipnis to a six-year extension that runs through the 2019 season and contains a club option for the 2020 campaign. According to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, the Beverly Hills Sports Council client receives a $1MM signing bonus and annual salaries of $2MM (2014), $4MM (2015), $6MM (2016), $9MM (2017), $13.5MM (2018) and $14.5MM (2019). The option, according to Bastain, is worth $16.5MM and contains a $2.5MM buyout.
  • GM Chris Antonetti told reporters that there's no "either/or" situation with Kipnis and Justin Masterson.
  • After the Columbus Clippers saw their season opener postponed because of rain on Thursday, Michael Bourn's Minor League rehab debut was also pushed back. Indians manager Terry Francona noted that the sidelined center fielder was scheduled to play for Columbus on Friday and Saturday. Bourn did not play Friday because of wet conditions, but is slated to play Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Designated hitter Jason Giambi and Terry Francona will sit down this weekend to discuss his rehab plan going forward. Cleveland is still weighing whether the 43-year-old veteran will require a Minor League rehab assignment, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

News and Notes:

  • According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun is again dealing with a thumb injury that hampered his swing in 2013.

  • The Cubs are exploring the idea of selling minority ownership shares as a way to help finance the stadium renovation, multiple sources told Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com.

  • Principal owner Mark Lerner told reporters yesterday, including Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, that the club's payroll is "beyond topped out." Kilgore wrote that there won't be any in-season salary added to the club's $134.7MM payroll (figure via the Associated Press), which ranks ninth in the Majors and represents a $25MM increase from 2013.

  • Edwin EncarnacionJose ReyesJose BautistaMark Buehrle and R.A. Dickey were the five Blue Jays players who would have been willing to defer salary to sign Ervin Santana, SportsNet.com's Shi Davidi reported.

  • Andy Martino of New York Daily News reported that the Mets still see dealing first baseman Ike Davis as their "likely endgame."
