In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Tuesday, August 26th.

Tribe News

  • Terry Francona was encouraged by the progress of Yan Gomes as he recovers from a concussion. Francona said that barring a setback, Gomes should be ready to go for the start of the Kansas City series on Friday.
  • David Murphy, who is rehabbing a strained oblique, took 45 swings off a tee on Tuesday and said he felt great. Murphy traveled with the team to Chicago and will continue to progress through baseball activities.
  • Jason Giambi began his rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Tuesday night, while Ryan Raburnmoved from Triple-A Columbus to Akron to continue his rehab.

Others News and Notes

  • David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution believes the Braves would like the revisit the idea of trading center fielder B.J. Upton this offseason, possibly by eating a large chunk of Upton's salary or even including a pitcher like Mike Minor in a deal. O'Brien also feels that there's at least a "pretty good chance" that Atlanta trades catcher Evan Gattis this offseason, due to his poor defense and the presence of top catching prospect Christian Bethancourt.
  • O'Brien also reported that the Braves have had to shut down lefty reliever Johnny Venters after he experienced soreness in his ability when trying to increase his velocity. Venters had been attempting to return from a second Tommy John surgery.
  • Andy Martino of the New York Daily News tweeted that Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon cleared waivers in large part due to his 2015 salary of $11 million, but New York is still receiving strong interest in the 41-year-old. Martino also reported that the Angels and Royals have considered attempting to deal for Colon.
  • The Mariners announced that they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with general manager Jack Zduriencik. Terms of the were not yet known.
  • According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, Monday night's terrific start has softened the stance of A.J. Burnett on retirement. Burnett said that it felt good to be able to go out and pitch well again.
  • Salisbury also said that the Phillies will likely call up Cuban pitcher Miguel Gonzalez in September. Gonzalez agreed to a three-year, $12 million deal with Philadelphia over the winter.
  • Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reported that the Angels could be targeting pitcher Trevor Cahill of the Diamondbacks, but Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the two clubs haven't discussed a deal in weeks. Cahill has already cleared waivers.
  • Peter Gammons was the first to report that the Tigers were awarded reliever Chad Qualls off waivers. Detroit and Houston have until Wednesday work out a trade.
  • Two more Cuban starts, first baseman Jozzen Cuesta and left-handed pitcher Misael Siverio, will hold workouts for interest clubs on Friday in Jupiter, Florida.
  • The Blue Jays designated outfielder Nolan Reimold for assignment and recalled fellow outfielder Kevin Pillar from Triple-A.
  • Lefty Wade LeBlanc was designated for assignment on Tuesday by the Angels.
