In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Sunday, May 4th.

Tribe News

  • The injuries to Michael Bourn and Jason Giambi both appear to be very minor. Bourn's hamstring was feeling good enough on Sunday that manager Terry Francona said he could be back in the lineup Monday night. Giambi's calf was feeling well enough to pinch-hit during Sunday's game, if he would have been needed.

Others News and Notes

  • Jerry Crasnick of ESPN tweeted that Cincinnati outfielder Jay Bruce will have surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee.  Crasnick said that Bruce is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.  Also on the Reds, MLB.com's Andy Call reported that closer Aroldis Chapman is expected to join the club on Friday if his last two rehab appearances go well.
  • In a somewhat surprising move, the Rays designated former All-Star closer Heath Bell for assignment. Bell was dealt to Tampa Bay from Arizona this past offseason and had struggled to the tune of a 7.27 ERA in 13 outings. What makes the move surprising is the fact that the Rays will still be on the hook for $5.5 million of Bell's $9 million salary for 2014.
  • Baltimore Executive Vice President told Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette on their SiriusXM radio show that his club has not discussed Kendrys Morales since they signed Nelson Cruz. There were reports last week that the Orioles may still be looking to sign Morales.
  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that scouts are saying the Blue Jays could be a very busy team at this year's trade deadline. Cafardo noted that if Toronto falls out of contention early, veterans Mark Buerhle,Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion could all be shopped.
  • Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweeted that righty starter Jair Jurrjens is attempting to make a comeback after having knee surgery last fall.
  • The A's claimed outfielder Nick Buss off waivers from the Dodgers and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
  • Houston recalled lefty reliever Darin Downs from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated fellow lefty Raul Valdes for assignment.

Giambi should have enough pride to quite,he is hurting the team .

Not that it's a huge difference but thought the Rays were only paying Bell $4.5M this year? Thought the Marlins were on the hook for $4M and the D'backs $500K.

Still a good amount of money to just drop. He's been terrible though. Rays did something similar with Pat Burrell a few years ago. Just goes to show no team is perfect.

Thing with Bourn's injury is he had lingering issues last year and we saw how that worked out....played rather poorly from May on. If Bourn's not 100% healthy then he hurts this team.

Ready to move on from Giambi too. Kottaras is basically Giambi....low batting average, walks a lot, has some power....big difference is he can actually play the field (and not too shabby either).

Time to move on from Giambi and I also think Bourn should be shutdown however long needed. Morgan has played better and you ride the hot hand.

Why is Giambi on this roster? Decisions like this are why the Indians are irrelevant.

That was "thread," not "ad," but my iPad Autocorrect had other ideas- sorry.

As I mentioned in the other ad, it probably would be better to be more cautious with Bourn's injury; this is the second time he's dealt with this injury, and if he took 1-2 weeks off, the weather may warm up enough, along with it healing, that he hopefully wouldn't have to worry about it the rest of the year. He pushes it again, and it may crop up again, as hamstrings (as well as abdominals) are those types of injuries that can hang around all year if you don't baby them for a while.

And, if Morgan can pick up where he left off up here, the Indians don't lose much, if anything, so Bourn and the Indians would be better served letting this heal fully so he can hopefully be 100% for the rest of the year rather than be on again and off again! as has been the case so far.

Tribe would be an improved team if Big G's injury put him on the 60 day DL and Bourn is on the 30. Big G is 0 for recent memory and a completely useless addition to the roster, and Morgan for whatever reasons sparks the team in a way that Bourn does not.
