Spikes complete sweep of Scrappers with 6-2 win

Niles, OH - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers fell behind early on Tuesday night and ran themselves out of two innings with the tying run in scoring position. As a result, the State College Spikes completed a two games sweep with a 6-2 win.

The Spikes grabbed the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. After Cameron Hill got the first two outs of the inning quickly, Jhohan Acevedo would draw a walk. Robelys Reyes would then reach base as well when he was hit by a pitch. Danny Diekroeger would follow with a double to leftfield to score both runs and give the Spikes a 2-0 lead.   

The Scrappers would get one run back in the bottom of the 4th inning. Francisco Mejia started the inning with a walk. He would then move to third on a double from Leo Castillo. With two outs, Yonathan Mendoza would single to score Mejia. Castillo was then caught rounding third too far and was tagged out to end the inning.

State College started to pull away in the top of the 6th inning. Reyes walked to start the inning and moved to third on Diekroeger’s second double. Both runners would then score on Nick Thompson’s RBI single.       

Mahoning Valley would get their second run in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Scrappers would load the bases with no outs. Bradley Zimmer would score on a double play groundball off the bat of David Armendariz. The Scrappers would strand a runner at third.    

The Spikes added two insurance runs the top of the 8th inning thanks to two walks and an RBI single from Brian O’Keefe and an RBI ground out from Brett Wiley.    

Hill (1-2) went 5 innings and allowed just 1 hit. Both runs he allowed were earned. Hill walked 2 and struck out 2. Jose Zapata would then go 2 innings. He allowed 2 runs, both earned on 4 hits. Zapata walked 2. Ramon Rodriguez would then pitch the final 2 innings. He allowed 2 runs, both earned, on 1 hit. He walked 2 and struck out 2.  

The Scrappers will now welcome Jamestown to Eastwood Field for the final time as Jamestown will move to Morgantown, WV for the 2015 season. First pitch is set for 7:05.
