The Captains fell to the Silver Hawks 3-0 Wednesday night after several failed attempts to bring in runs. After two pitching changes and only five hits, the Captains just could not bring men around to home.

All the way through the seventh inning, the Captains never hit anything more than a single. Singles came from first baseman Erik Gonzalez, right fielder Logan Vick, catcher Jeremy Lucas, designated hitter Eric Haase and another from Gonzalez. Those singles were the only hits for the Captains on the night and the only positives for the Captains as well.

Right-hander Nick Pasquale was replaced by right-hander Michael Peoples in the top of the 5th, and Peoples was replaced by right-hander Josh Martin in the top of the 8th, but those changes proved to not be very beneficial for the Captains.

On the other hand, the Silver Hawks were able to put men on base and continue to move them all the way to home. Left fielder Alex Glenn proved himself early with a single at the top of the second, got to first from a wild pitch from Pasquale in the fourth and another single in the top of the sixth.

The Silver Hawks second baseman Fidel Pena also had a good game Wednesday night. He had a third inning single and a double during the sixth that advanced him to third on a fielding error from Vick. Pena ended up rounding to home after a sacrificed out from teammate and third baseman Brandon Drury. Pena’s homer was the first of the game and his 16th on the season.

Severel players from the Silver Hawks seemed to have a better Wednesday night than the entire Captains team. The Captains didn’t land on base until the third inning and didn’t provide much more after that.

The Captains didn’t have as bad of a night as statistics showed though. Pasquale didn’t allow any runs, Peoples only allowed two and Martin only allowed one. Despite only having four singles, the Captains average behind the plate was .238 compared to the Silver Hawks .276.

Despite the loss, manager Scooter Tucker wasn’t disappointed in his teams performance. “You have to give them credit. They played defense, they swung the bats okay and pitched an outstanding game,” said Tucker.

“We didn’t score today, but we haven’t given up any,” said Tucker. The Captains were 19 innings strong without giving up any runs until Pena’s run during the sixth inning.

This loss brings the Silver Hawks to 20-9 and the Captains to 10-20 on the season. Although the Captains are having a less than spectacular season, tonight’s loss wasn’t a total loss for Tucker. “We just came across a guy who had a very good night pitching,” Tucker said.

That pitcher Tucker is referring to is left-hander Daniel Watts, who came into tonight’s game 4-0 and with a 3.90 ERA. Tonight gave Watts another win, bringing his season record to 5-0, allowing only four hits on the night and dropping his ERA to 3.08.

The Captains continue their three game series at home against the South Bend Silver Hawks with games at 6:30 pm on Thursday and Friday.
