SeaWolves Edge RubberDucks, 2-1
(Erie, Pa.) May 17, 2014 – Erie SeaWolves lefty Kyle Ryan tossed shutout baseball for nearly seven innings, and Jason Krizan had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead Erie to a 2-1 victory over the Akron RubberDucks Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.
The loss snapped Akron’s four-game winning streak and set the stage for the rubber-match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35. The RubberDucks (27-14) maintained their five-game lead in the EL West, as second-place Bowie lost at Reading. Despite the loss, Akron is still one of the hottest teams in the minor leagues, having won 17 of the last 20 games.
Ryan (3-5) entered Saturday’s game having lost his last three starts, including one against Akron on May 6th. This time, the 22-year-old Ryan left little doubt of the outcome, blanking the potent Akron offense on two hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Krizan singled off RubberDucks starter Will Roberts (4-4) in the first inning and later scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth, he laced an RBI single to left to drive home Marcus Lemon, who had doubled. Roberts scattered seven hits and two runs over five innings, but suffered his second straight loss.
The RubberDucks wrecked the shutout bid in the eighth on Tyler Naquin’s RBI single off Erie reliever Guido Knudson. The Ducks had two runners on with one out, but closer Jose Valdez came on to get Francisco Lindor on a fly out, and Joe Wendle on a grounder to strand both runners. He came back in the ninth and retired the side in order for his fourth save.
Bryan LaHair was held hitless, snapping his hitting streak at nine games. Tony Wolters also went hitless, snapping his hit streak at seven games. Bryson Myles, Alex Lavisky and Lindor joined Naquin with one hit apiece for the RubberDucks.
The RubberDucks and SeaWolves will play complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30. RHP Cody Anderson (2-3, 5.36) will start for Akron, while RHP Wilsen Palacios (3-1, 4.67) is the announced starter for Erie.
