NILES, OH - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have been looking for a game where all three phases of the game, hitting, pitching and fielding, all come together on the same night for a few weeks. On Saturday night they got the game they were looking for. The Scrappers banged out 7 hits while the pitching staff did not walk a single batter in a 5-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters.

The Scrappers jumped out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Greg Allen started the inning with a walk. He would promptly steal second, one of three steals on the night. After advancing to third on a fly out, Allen would score on Francisco Mejia’s RBI sac fly.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Scrappers would add another run. With one out, Bradley Zimmer connected on his third homerun of the season. The solo homer to rightfield moved the Scrappers out to a 2-0 lead.

The Crosscutters would cut the deficit in half in the top of the 7th inning. After Derek Campbell singled to start the inning, Jose Pujols would then double off the wall in rightfield to score Campbell. The run cut the Scrappers lead to 2-1. Pujols would end up getting stranded at third.

Mahoning Valley would put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the 7th inning. With one out Austin Fisher would walk. Allen would follow with a single to put runners at first and second. Fisher would move to third on a fly out from Steven Patterson. Following Allen’s third stolen base of the night, Zimmer would single to center to drive in both Fisher and Allen. Zimmer would advance to second on an error on the play. Mejia would then bring in Zimmer with an RBI single of his own for a 5-1 lead.

Cameron Hill (1-1) started for the Scrappers. Hill went 5 scoreless innings. He allowed just 4 hits and struck out 3 while earning his first professional win. Edward Estrella would go 1.1 innings in relief. He allowed 1 run, earned, on 2 hits. He did not walk a batter or strike out a batter. Cortland Cox would then go 1.2 scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit while striking out 1. Luke Eubank then went a scoreless 9th inning. Eubank allowed 1 hit and no walks or strikeouts.

Allen’s three steals moves him into first place in the NYPL with 22 on the season. It also moves him into a four way tie for fourth all time in Scrappers history.

The Scrappers will look for the series win on Sunday at 5:05. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
