BATAVIA, NY - For the second straight night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers offense struggled to put the ball in play, striking out 11 times. However, the Scrappers were able to hit when it mattered the most, scoring a run in the top of the 9th inning and then holding on in the bottom half for a 2-1 win over the Batavia Muckdogs.

The Scrappers fell behind in the bottom of the 5th inning. John Norwood doubled to start the inning before being sacrificed to third. Mason Davis then drove in the run from third on a ground out for a 1-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley came back to tie up the game in the top of the 7th inning. With one out, Yonathan Mendoza reached first on a fielder’s choice. With two outs Mendoza stole second base. Austin Fisher then singled to rightfield to score Mendoza from second to tie the game up at 1.

The Scrappers took their first lead of the game in the top of the 9th inning. With one out, Mendoza would single and promptly steal second base. After a strikeout, Ordomar Valdez would single to rightfield to score Mendoza with the game winning run to make the score 2-1.

Luke Eubank worked the bottom of the 9th inning. The Muckdogs would load the bases with one out. A ground ball to Valdez at third would allow the Scrappers to get the lead runner at the plate for out number two. Eubank would then strike out Ryan Aper with the bases loaded to end the game.

Sean Brady started for the Scrappers and went another strong 6 innings. He allowed 1 run, earned, on 6 hits. Brady walked 2 and struck out 3. Ramon Rodriguez (2-0) would earn the win going 2 innings of shutout relief. Rodriguez allowed 1 hit and struck out 3 without walking a batter. Eubank (2) earned the save with 1 inning of relief. He allowed 2 hits and walked 1 and struck out 1.

The Scrappers will go for the series win Saturday night at 7:05. The game will be broadcast on 600AM WSOM due to the Cleveland Browns game on 1240AM. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
