Niles, OH - On Monday night the Mahoning Valley Scrappers fell victim early to shaky defense and were never able to recover, despite rallying in the 9th inning, as they fell 4-3 to the State College Spikes.

State College would get on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning. Chase Raffield doubled to start the inning. He would then score on Luis Cruz’s RBI single.

In the top of the 4th inning, the Spikes would add the rest of their runs. The inning started with Jake Stone reaching on an error. Stone would come around to score in Cruz’s second RBI single. Raffield and Cruz would also score on Jhohan Acevedo’s single and Darren Seferina’s RBI sac fly.

Mahoning Valley would get their first run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Francisco Mejia led off the inning connecting on his second homerun of the season, a solo shot to right center to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Scrappers would get two more runs back in the bottom of the 5th inning. With one out, Greg Allen was hit by a pitch and Steven Patterson walked. Bradley Zimmer then tripled to left center to score both Allen and Patterson. It was Zimmer’s second triple of the year.

In the bottom of the 9th inning the Scrappers would get the tying run on base on Drake Roberts’ single. But the Scrappers would strand the run at first after back to back fly outs ended the game.

Juan Santana (1-8) started and took the loss for Mahoning Valley. He went 5 innings while allowing 5 hits. Santana gave up 4 runs, all earned. He walked 3 and struck out 2. Luis Gomez worked an inning of relief. He walked 2 and struck out 1 while picking off 2 runners. Justin Garcia then worked the final 3 innings. He allowed no runs on just 2 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 1.

The Scrappers and Spikes will meet for the last time this season on Tuesday night at 7:05.
