JAMESTOWN - The Clevelvand Indians Single-A farm team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, opened their season on Monday night against the Jamestown Jammers.
Excitement surrounded the Scrappers' season opener as they signed their number one draft pick outfielder Tyler Naquin on Friday. Overwhelmed with positive emotions, Mahoning Valley started off the season the way they wanted to with an 8-5 victory over the Miami Marlins' single-A farm team, the Jamestown Jammers.
Right-handed reliever Luis Morel came in for relief of starter Geoffrey Davenport in the 4th inning and was credited with the win. Juan Romero led the way with two home runs and four RBI in his first four at bats of the season.
Left fielder Hunter Jones also had a solid opening day performance with two hits, including a triple in the sixth inning. Jones' sixth inning triple triggered a three-run inning which put the Scrappers ahead of the Jammers for good.
Scrappers starting pitcher lefty Geoffrey Davenport struggled in his season debut. Davenport gave up three earned runs and four hits in just over three innings of work. However, Morel overshadowed Davenport with an outstanding performance in relief allowing just one hit and no earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Relievers Jack Wagoner and Enosil Tejeda closed out the final three innings of the game for the Scrappers. Wagoner gave up one earned run while Tejeda finished the game with a strikeout, a fly out, and a groundout in one inning of work.
With their season opening win, the Scrappers look to improve upon their 2011 record of 41-34. With nobody on the team older than the age of 24, the Scrappers are an extremely young and talented team and will look to build on their season opening win with more wins. With the youth and talent that the Scrappers have this season it would not be surprising to see multiple players move up to Low-A Lake County throughout the season.
Their next game is on Tuesday June 19th at Jamestown, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM ET.
