The Cleveland Indians selected the contract of lefty starter Scott Kazmir from Triple A Columbus and added him to the 25-man roster. To allow the move to happen, lefty reliever Nick Hagadone was optioned back to Columbus.
The move appears strange on the outside looking in since it was believed that Kazmir wasn't going to be called up to the big league roster until his start on Saturday. The oddity of the move was cleared when it was announced via Twitter by the Indians that Kazmir strained his ab during Monday's workout:
Kazmir strained his ab during Monday's workout, may need a trip to DL. Move allows club to back date DL/bring up optioned starter for Sat— Cleveland Indians (@Indians) April 2, 2013
Kazmir's injury may indicate a DL-move in the coming days, and adding him to the roster today will allow the Indians to back-date the move to today, as opposed to waiting until Saturday.

Kazmir has bullpen session scheduled for Wednesday. Indians will re-evaluate him and decide whether to have him go ahead with it as planned.— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) April 2, 2013
It would be a safe bet that the Indians will be safe with their fragile starter, especially with some good arms sitting in Columbus ready to take over at a moments' notice. Certainly not great news heading into the first game of the season, but perhaps it's a precursor to a Trevor Bauer or Carlos Carrasco move to the rotation.
