Schaumburg scored two runs in the eighth to squeeze past Lake Erie 6-5 Saturday in game one of the best of five series for the Frontier League championship.

Lake Erie got the league championship series off to a quick and promising start compliments of a Daniel Bowman solo home run in the top of the first inning. Starting off his day with a 1-0 advantage, starter Jason Wilson could not take advantage of the early lead.

Giving up three runs in the bottom of the first, Wilson struggled in his outing with the team lasting only 2.1 innings and giving up four runs on five hits and a walk.

Coming back to tie the game up at 3-3 in the top of the third, th Crushers got help in the form of an RBI triple by Craig Hertler and a double by Seth Granger that scored Hertler from third.

Tied at three in the bottom of the third, the Crushers ran into some bad fielding that turned a triple by the Boomers' Jordan Dean into a run. Two batters later, Wilson's day came to an end after walking a batter.

Matt Smith came on to fan the flames for the Crushers and would prove his worth for four solid innings.

Gaining a lead in the top of the sixth, the Crushers strung together some luck with a hit and and a crucial error by Schaumburg. Russell Moldenhauer and Anderson Hidalgo both knocked in runners put aboard by the error.

Two innings later in the bottom of the eighth, Smith day took a turn for the worse.

Leading off the inning, Smith walked his first batter, then hit a wall. Facing Dean, Smith had a wild pitch to move the runner followed by a hit by dean that was misplayed by Granger to put runners on second and third.

Connor Whalen came on to relieve Smith and walked his first batter to load the bases. Striking out his next man, Whalen got yanked for Brad Duffy.

With one out and the bases loaded, Duffy let loose the second wild pitch of the inning, but costing the Crushers a run in the process. Giving up a single to the next batter, Duffy's disaster of a day surrendered a pair of runs, both Smith's runners, to put the Crushers down 6-5.

In the top of the ninth, the Crushers put up a fight with Moldenhauer doubling to center and a single by Juan Sanchez with one out, but could not get the tying run across 90 feet away.

Game two of the series in Schaumburg will be tonight at 5:00.
