Indians manager Terry Francona announced on Tuesday that Carlos Santana will be the club's regular third baseman to start the season.

Lonnie Chisenhall has already made the roster, but he will play in more of a backup role at third base when Santana needs to fill in as the backup catcher or needs a day off. Francona made it clear that it will not be a platoon at third base and Santana will play on a regular basis, so Chisenhall may be the regular DH at the outset of the season.

Also, the club announced that Jason Giambi will be added to the 40-man roster on Sunday and will be placed on the Major League disabled list (fractured rib) on that day retroactive to March 21. He would be eligible to come off the DL on April 5th and will travel with the team in the meantime.

With the Indians already set to add Nyjer Morgan to the roster, the Indians will need to clear two spots on the 40-man roster to add Morgan and Giambi. Right-handed reliever Scott Atchison is also a strong favorite to nail down a bullpen spot, so the Indians could have as many as three 40-man decisions to make by this weekend. At the moment there are no candidates to be 60-day DLed, so two to three players will probably be designated for assignment. The candidates for that would be Colt HynesScott BarnesFrank HerrmannPreston Guilmet and Justin Sellers.

I think with the left handed bat of Lonnie that he will be the replacement for Big G since no way can he have the same year as last. When injury happen when you are older, it takes a while to recover. I love Big G but like I have said before, there comes a time when you have to retire? We know that Michael Brantley can play centerfield very well and I do not see why we have put Morgan on the roster with so many good young fast players that we have. After Tomlin pitched yesterday, I feel that he will be going to AAA to make room for Atchison and CC to be the fifth starter. Colt Hynes, Scott Barnes, Frank Hermann, Preston Guilmet and Justin Seller, who is injured, I agree will be sent down to AAA. I hope Justin Seller get well since he is a very good player. I think Terry has a good team other than the
selection of Morgan, and Big G and signing of David Murphy, who I feel will never reach the past performance he had with Texas and this will be his last stop and he also did some good things with Texas in the past but? I cannot wait for the start of the season and hope that management waits up and signs Masterson but who knows about them. Thanks for the great articles you bring us the fan. Go Tribe.

You can't be serious.Right now you would get nothing for chiz that we don't already have.He is a hitter that we need, and you will realize this at seasons end. We have enough #5 starters in CC,Tomlin,Marcum, and Bauer.Chiz will get beaucoup AB's in Franconas' system

I wonder what sort of a starting pitcher we could get in trade for Chis.... I had him picked for a breakout year this year and while I certainly understand the need to play Santana every day I think Chis at this stage of his career needs to do the same.
