SALEM, VA. –– The Carolina Mudcats raced out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to a 13-6 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday night.

For the second straight night, the Mudcats used their lethal bats to record fourteen hits while relying on solid pitching and defense. Patient at-bats and poor pitching from Salem created a season-high twelve walks for Carolina.

Carolina starter Cole Sulser (4-9, 5.23 ERA) went 6.1 innings and allowed three earned runs off of five hits and two walks on his way to the win.

The Mudcats bullpen gave up three combined runs in 2.2 innings. But with the game already in hand, the runs were virtually meaningless.

Salem's Simon Mercedes (2-8, 5.34 ERA) was quickly pulled from his start after he surrendered five earned runs off of four hits and three walks in just 1.1 innings. The right hander's poor effort resulted in his third straight loss.

William Cuevas and Kyle Kraus came out of the Red Sox bullpen and combined to allow four additional earned runs off of nine hits and a whopping seven walks.

After Salem took an one run lead in the bottom of the first, the Mudcats reeled off eleven unanswered runs in just three innings.

Cleveland Indians player of the week, Jeremy Lucas, earned a lead off walk in the second and Alex Monsalvefollowed it up with a double to put two runners in scoring position for the Mudcats. Jerrud Sabourin then brought both runners around to score with a double to right. Sabourin went on to score himself after a Logan Vick walk and a Todd Hankins RBI single.

Later in the inning Yhoxian Medina poked a ground ball single through the infield to score Vick and a Joe Seversac fly was enough to score Hankins to make it 5-1.

The Mudcats posted another five run inning in the top of the third. Carolina loaded the bases behind two walks and a single from James Roberts. Logan Vick earned another walk to force a runner home and a throwing error on a Todd Hankins ground ball allowed another run to score.

With the bases still loaded, Yhoxian Medina plated Vick with a sac fly to left fielder Kevin Heller. Hankins then scored the final run of the inning off a Joe Sever line drive single.

A Jeremy Lucas score in the top of the fourth gave Carolina an insurmountable 11-1 lead. Carolina would go on to add a couple of insurance runs in the top of the sixth.

The Red Sox countered in the bottom of the fourth with a Mario Martinez score that stopped the bleeding but the home team didn't find a groove offensively until the seventh inning.

Three consecutive singles in the bottom of the seventh scored a run and put runners on the corners for the Red Sox. A wild pitch from reliever Ben Heller allowed another run to come home. Salem then used their fourth single of the inning, this time from Dreily Guerrero to score speedster Matty Johnson from second.

With the game all but over, the Red Sox manufactured one final run in the bottom of the eighth off a sac fly from Kevin Heller that brought that the score to 13-6.

The win brings Carolina to 21-18 during the second half and 50-56 on the year.

The Mudcats return to action on Thursday as they close out their series with the Salem Red Sox. Carolina ace Ryan Merritt is set to square off with Cody Kukuk.
