BOWIE, MD – After splitting three series and losing one outright, thus far in 2014, the Akron RubberDucks were looking for a victory to set the tone for the series.  Akron was able to do just that taking the opening game of the three-game series with a 3-2 win on Thursday.

The RubberDucks pitching staff was able to continue their recent run of success, and the offense did just enough to secure the victory.  Akron’s hurlers have now allowed just eight runs in the past four games, and continued that success on Thursday as Will RobertsTyler Sturdevant and Kyle Crockett combined to throw a six hit, two-run performance.

Starting pitchers Will Roberts and Tim Berry both threw well, and pounded the strike zone.  Roberts threw strikes 67 percent of his pitches, while Berry sat at a respectable 63 percent.  Roberts lasted seven innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks.  Berry exited in-line for the victory, surrendering just one run through six innings.

The RubberDucks bullpen threw two perfect innings, but the Baysox were able to make a late push in the bottom of the ninth to make things interesting.

With reliever Kyle Crockett on the mound to begin the inning, first baseman Jake Lowery dropped the ball on a routine throw from shortstop Francisco Lindor that allowed Dariel Alvarez to reach base.  Crockett then hit Michael Ohlman with a pitch, allowing the first two batters of the inning to reach base.  But Crockett settled in and forced two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.

At the plate for Akron, Bryson Myles was able to maintain his scorching start to the season, finishing the night 2-3 at the plate. Myles is now hitting .394 (13 for 33) on the year, good for eighth in the league amongst all qualifying batters. In 2013, the Indians sixth-round selection out of Stephen F. Austin College set a Carolina Mudcats record with a 23-game hit streak, and in 2011, Myles finished fifth in the New York-Penn League in batting average, while playing for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

In addition to Myles, Giovanny Urshela added two hits, including a go-ahead two-RBI single in the top half of the eighth inning.  Catcher Tony Wolters tacked-on an RBI double, while Tyler Holt notched his third stolen base of the year.

For Bowie, reliever Marcel Prado suffered his first loss of the season, giving up two runs in two innings.  At the dish, right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang had two hits, one of which was a RBI single.  Alvarez and Ronald Bermudez each notched doubles, while first baseman Christian Walker scored a run and added two hits.

With Thursday’s victory, the RubberDucks now sit at 7-7 on the year, two games behind first-place Richmond.  Bowie falls to 8-6 with the loss, one game ahead of Akron in the Western Division of the Eastern League.

On Friday, the RubberDucks will send veteran Kyle Davies to the mound looking for their first series win of the 2014 season.  Davies has made two starts this year and sports a 1.50 ERA to go along with a 1.25 WHIP.  In his previous start, also against the Baysox, the 30 year-old righty didn’t allow an earn run through six innings and struck out three.

For Bowie, Jake Pettit will be making his third start of the year, his second against the RubberDucks.  In a victory on April 13th, the former 42nd round pick out of Western Oregon State College surrendered four earned runs on nine hits.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm ET at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland.
