ANCHESTER, NH - New Hampshire lefty Richard Bleier worked five innings of one-run baseball, and left fielder Matt Newman clubbed a three-run homer to lead the Fisher Cats to an 8-5 victory over the Akron RubberDucks on Saturday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The loss snapped Akron’s five-game winning streak. The RubberDucks missed an opportunity to take over first place in the EL West. Richmond lost at Portland, 1-0, in 10 innings, but with Akron’s loss, they maintain a half-game lead over theRubberDucks. Third-place Bowie defeated Trenton and pulled to within 6 ½ of Akron with 15 games to play. The top two teams in the division make the post-season.

Bleier came to the rescue for the Fisher Cats (60-66) by tossing five impressive innings of relief after starter Blake McFarland was lifted after just one inning. Bleier (5-5) retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced. The only batter to reach against him was Anthony Gallas, who hit a lead-off homer in the fourth inning, his 14th of the season. Bleier walked none and struck out five.

The RubberDucks (70-57) held a 1-0 lead after the first inning thanks to a RBI single by Bryan LaHair. That changed in the bottom of the second when Duke von Schamann gave up a pair of singles and then a two-out, three-run shot to Newman to make it 3-1. It was Newman’s sixth of the year. After Gallas’ homer made it 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Cats scored three more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead and chase von Schamann (7-7).

The Duke saw his personal, four-game winning streak come to an end. He worked 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs, six of which were earned. He walked one and struck out three, and lost for the first time since July 20th.

The RubberDucks tried to rally, scoring twice in the seventh on a RBI single by Alex Lavisky and a RBI double by Ronny Rodriguez. They had runners on second and third with two outs, but Randy Boone came in to douse the rally with a strikeout of Ollie Linton. Boone stayed in and finished the game for his 10th save, although he surrendered another RBI single to Lavisky in the ninth to make it 8-5.

Notes: Lefty Elvis Araujo relieved von Schamann in the fifth and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He has worked 12 shutout innings over his last 11 appearances. Gallas’ homer was his third of the road trip, and his 22nd overall, counting the eight he hit at Class-A Carolina. He leads the entire organization in homers. Jaime Pedroza was hitless in four trips, snapping his five-game hitting streak. A crowd of 7,028 was announced.

The RubberDucks and Fisher Cats will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35. RHP Joe Colon (8-6, 3.33) is the scheduled starter for Akron. The Fisher Cats will counter with RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (5-2, 2.10). The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and online at www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
