News on Offense:
Alex Monsalve had a great week at the plate, hitting .360 and blasting two homeruns. He drove in eight and brought his batting average up to a respectable .265. Monsalve’s first half was less than stellar and he has really picked up his game in the second half.
Jerrud Sabourin continues his season-long hot streak. He batted .417 this which included a walk-off homerun to give the Captains the win on Thursday evening. He also drove in seven runs and only struck out three times in 24 at-bats. Sabourin is currently hitting .295 with 17 doubles and 38 RBI (which leads the team).
Leonardo Castillo’s struggles continue at the plate. Castillo batted .143 and scored two runs. He walked once and struck out four times. I am surprised he was not sent down to Mahoning Valley once the short season affiliate’s season started back in mid-June to help him build his confidence back up (similar to what they did with Robel Garcia, but that experiment is not working so well). He is batting .188 and I am starting wonder if he will be able to break the Mendoza line by the end of the season.
Hitter of the Week: Jose Ramirez
In his second week with the Captains, Ramirez just absolutely tore the cover of the ball. He hit three doubles, stole three bases, AND had a five-hit game over the course of the week.
Weekly Batting Stats:
News on Pitching:
Louis Head picked up his first professional win on Thursday night. Head was drafted in the 18th round out of Texas State in the recent amateur draft. He went four innings and only allowed two hits.
Elvis Araujo is starting to pitch like the Elvis Araujo that the Indians highly regarded. Araujo started two games this week and went ten innings and only allowed four earned runs (he allowed eight total). He struck out nine and walked only two. Araujo also brought his ERA down to 4.54 with this week’s performance.
Rob Nixon continues to solidify himself as a relief prospect. The big righty went 6 1/3 innings this week, allowing one earned run (three runs total) on six hits. He also struck out three and walked one. For the season, Nixon has a solid 2.86 ERA through 44 innings pitched out of the pen.
Pitcher of the Week: Joseph Colon
This is the second week in a row for Joe Colon. The guy has been the man for the Captains all season. Joe allowed two earned runs this week (both were in his first start), and sported a 1-1 record.
