News on Offense:
After a few miserable weeks in the batter’s box, the Captains managed to hit over .250 as a team this week. Through eight weeks of play, the Captains are batting .248 as a team (which is good for 8th in the entire 16-team Midwest League).
Catcher Alex Lavisky had a good week in the box, going 7-for-19 (.368) with a homerun, stolen base, and seven RBI. Lavisky has also brought his average up to .260 after a (roughly) three week slump. He looks to be a streaky hitter thus far in his career.
Outfielder Luigi Rodriguez was solid at the plate this week, hitting at a .300 clip. Rodriguez was in a bit of a slump all May, but has started to turn a corner with solid week. One concern though is his strikeout to walks. He struck out nine times and walked only twice. But, he is getting on-base (OBP is at .341) and is generating runs at the top of Dave Wallace’s line-up.
Hitter of the Week: Jerrud Sabourin
This was probably one of the easiest selections I have had all season. Sabourin tore the cover off the ball this week with a batting average of .500. What’s more impressive is he only struck out twice in 22 at-bats. Sabourin also collected three doubles, a stolen base, and four RBI.

News on Pitching:
After doing extremely well for a month, the pitching staff laid an egg and had an atrocious week. The team ERA was just above 6.00. What did not help matters was having four pitchers with an ERA above ten (Felix Sterling, 80.60; Manny Carmona, 13.50; Shawn Morimando, 12.00; Luis DeJesus, 15.00).
After being called-up, Luis DeJesus was thrown right into the fire on Tuesday. He went three innings and gave up five earned runs. He also gave up one homerun, walked three and struck out two. DeJesus was the Indians 11th round selection in last year’s draft.
Jeff Johnson continues his late-inning effectiveness by recording two saves this past week. He has really settled in since his first few outings and has been a stabilizing force at the back of the bullpen. He currently owns nine saves on the season with a 3-1 record and a 5.66 ERA.
Pitcher of the Week: Grant Sides
Sides did not record a decision this week for the Captains, but he was lights out as a reliever. He struck out nine batters in six and a third innings and did not allow a batter to reach via base on balls. He allowed one earned run. Sides was a 12th round pick last year.
