News on Offense:
Outfielder Luigi Rodriguez is in the Midwest League’s top ten for hits on the year. I know it’s still early in the season, but Rodriguez has accrued 25 hits in the first three weeks. Four hits are doubles, three are triples and one is a home run (obviously, the rest are singles). Luigi is batting .338 with an OPS of .911.
Second baseman Robel Garcia has been showing glimpses of breaking out of his slump. After batting .185 last week, Robel raised his average 100 points and batted .286 this week. He struck out one more time this week, but he also walked three times (compared with once last week). His batting average is up to .217 compared to the mid-100’s last week.
Overall, the offense is currently ranked fourth in the Midwest League in average at .264, third in hits (187), and fourth in triples (11). The offense has only struck out 144 times on the season (Peoria has 169) and has walked 62 times (Beloit leads with 84 BB).
Hitter of the Week: Bryson Myles
Myles was a force to be reckoned with this week at the plate and on the base paths. Bryson hit .409 with four stolen bases, four RBI, two doubles and two triples. One of the stolen bases was a steal of home. Myles has brought his average up to .294 with one home run and six stolen bases.

News on Pitching:
The Captains pitched their second shut out of the season Friday evening versus Clinton. More importantly, the shut out snapped their 10-game losing streak. Cody Anderson went six strong innings, only surrendering four hits. He struck out four and walked one. The bullpen followed with three more innings of one-hit ball. Rob Nixon picked up the hold and Kyle Blair pitched the ninth to preserve the win.
Jeff Johnson picked up the first save of the season for the Captains on Monday afternoon versus Kane County. Johnson pitched two scoreless and hitless innings. He also struck out three Cougar batters.
The bullpen pitched better this week after last week’s abysmal performance. This week, the ERA was much better at 3.47 (12.27 last week) and it picked up its first save of the season.
Pitcher of the Week: Cody Anderson
In 11 innings, Anderson allowed just one earned run. He struck out 10 and walked only one batter. Anderson also logged two wins. For the season, he is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA with 20 strikeouts and four walks. He is also the only pitcher on the staff with two wins.
